Calamity which is defined as "a state of deep distress or misery caused by major misfortune or loss," probably best describes Canes fans especially the die hards that are CIS and the program itself. But the present Cane disaster was brought on by the University itself. I have been a Canes fan since I went to my first game as a kid, Canes vs Auburn in the OB in the year of our Lord 19 hundred and 67, yep that long ago. The Canes were decent that year and the one before but after that it was quite the ride but I went to games when I could and listened on the radio in those days and always hoped. And a guy named Lou Saban came to town and though he didnt win he began a novel idea he began to recruit from my hood (John Turner, John Swain) And I don't think the administration ever foresaw having the kind of success that was brought on by Schnellenberger and continued through Johnson, Erickson, Butch til 2003. The admin wanted no part of the attention the bad guy image that Miami's style brought. They liked the winning but like a large part of Americana didn't really like the in your face bragadacio and the unabashed and uninhibited delight in delivering the butt whippings. And lets face it, they didn't like the Miami Hood culture (style of football) Starting w/ Shalala they clearly purposely tried to soften the U's image (previous presidents failed) and no longer wanted to be identified w/ the "culture" that came with and was identified with what was known as the U back then. They fired Coaker more because of the FIU brawl than anything and the murder of Bryan Pata didnt help the U's image either. So they hired Randy and told him his number one job was to keep a lid on things, their priority was not winning, but doing well enough to bring in bowl money and collect their share of the ACC payout.
As a result of the administration's purposely trying to take the teeth out of the program and the essence of what made the U, "the U" they have succeeded in destroying the program. And it seems that as a result of not trying to do its best now the Canes can't, no matter how hard they try, its like they/we are CURSED. Its like the guy who has done wrong for so long he just can't do right and when he does, because its so hard to stay on the straight and narrow he is tripped up by just about any set back.
How do we account for the strange career ending injuries to Ahman Richards and Malik Young, the strange accidental deaths of past stars?
And add to that the Canes have had to overcome the bias against starting with the press, (in the old days our own). And the REFEREES I cannot remember the last game when there wasn't a really bad call made against the Canes, or a clear infraction that should have been called that wasn't. If I didn't know any better I would swear that the refs were cheating. And they are making us pay for "The U" parts I&II. Soldinger did us no favor with his hype about they would "kick, bite, scratch spit anything to win." The U's success and swagger is being held against the current Canes even its own administration..
And then there is a consistent lack of fundamentals, bad coaching, including an insane inability to properly assess the talent and adapt offensive and defensive strategy around the talent at hand, or adopt game plans. This has been so ridiculous that most of us knew that after Randy's and Golden's first games as coach they didn't have a clue. And it seems we can add Diaz to that list.
And there must be something in the water in South Florida because our players consistently make the dumbest mistakes and appear to have absolutely no football IQ at all, the Florida game was a good point in case, holding AWAY from the play, returning interceptions INTO the middle of the field instead of the sideline where it was clear, the list is long.
Most of you have to admit who watch football that you just don't see TOTAL ineptitude like this, from the BOT to the field. I think the only fair thing to do even though this sounds ridiculous, since the U's administration does not want what they fear may come with success (having to be identified with "that culture") they should either drop the program or drop it to a lower division and put us poor loooong suffering fans out of our misery.
