Cal vs Oregon

Three observations (from the highlights):

  1. I always have to do a double take to work out which team is Oregon. They must have 30 different uniforms at this point - I don't want to tell Nike they don't understand branding, but...
  2. I know I'm old school when I love that Cal offence more than the Oregon one. Love the roll outs, the misdirection and the dump offs to the TEs underneath.
  3. That's a thoroughly unimpressive win for Mario - I think that's who he is as a HC though. Out talents teams, but still he's 5-1 and can tell me to **** off.

Mario is what he is.
- they are now 1-5 ATS this year. They never blow teams out. It’s what Mario wants to do.
- Justin Herbert…that is all.
- He will recruit extremely well
- He tops out at 9-3, 10-2, with a bad loss somewhere.

Is that better than what we have, sure, but I would rather take a flyer on someone who can put us over the top.
I keep thinking about Kliff Kingsbury. He was thought of as a failed College Coach at a low end power 5 school. Sample size is small but, he has the cardinals in the right direction.
Is there someone out there that can possibly strike the same way? I don’t know, I just don’t think Mario is the answer.
Is Kingsbury bringing Murray with him?

That's literally the only reason he's been 'successful' in the NFL. That guy pulls miracle plays out of his **** every ******* week.

Still with Mario. No one else on that list has the presence that Mario has. Also, the kids nowadays have a lot of say on how the coach looks, it is my opinion that the kids in Oregon keep things close so that coach doesnt garner too much attention. Oregon will lose again because those kids read message boards and they know who wants their coach.

Yeah, I assumed that would come up, and he was on the hot seat to start the year. But it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. A lot of coaches are a QB away from being considered good. And a QB away from being considered not.
Either way he is making it work. I want a coach who has a plan (that includes sound schematics) and can’t live it.
He has at least done that.

Napier
Freeze
Herman

Are 3 great options for the task of what we need to become a competitive team.

There are coaches that aren’t former Canes or don’t have any connection to Miami who are actually good, I know that’s a shock to this board but I swear, it’s not illegal to hire someone who isn’t connected to the program...
I think Lane would also kill it here, and he keeps a house in Boca I believe

No no no on Herman. Why take a failed coach who failed with all the resources?

Anyone? Anyone? Napier doesn’t have power 5 HC experience. Was fired as a OC at Clemson.

Freeze absolutely yea.

Again this isn’t hard. If you are tired of failing with inexperienced power 5 coaches, you go after:

1.)Urban
2.)Bob Stoops
3.)Hugh Freeze
4.)Lane Kiffin
5.)Mario-just for recruiting
6.)Mark Stoops
7.)Then you get to non power 5 candidates like Luke Fickell. He over Napier because Cincy is playing teams consistently better than Louisiana like almost beating UGA in bowl game, and beating ND in South Bend.
8.)Napier

As I said three weeks ago when Cristobal was the flavor of the week (before it shifted to Clawson, then Stoops)... if you want Cristobal, then just get Schiano. He essentially gives you the same style of coach as Mario, but he is less expensive and has a smaller buyout.

If you want Stoops, then get Ed Orgeron instead. Stoops makes a gazillion dollars at UK with all his incentives and no expectations , Ed O is probably going to be a free agent and would cost pennies on the dollar. He built one of the most dominant teams of the century just two years ago.

The two coaches that I think would be the best fits and most successful are Tom Herman and Lane Kiffin. Also similar coaches in a lot of ways.

On top of Stoops making $5.25M a year at Kentucky, his buyout is something like $20M. He's not going anywhere.

Buyout is going to be high I think.

How are we thinking at this point? There are 800 coaching threads. Has to be in there somewhere.

The buyout is low (1.75), salary is very good though.

Not according to this

Stoops is the 15th-highest paid coach in the country and is set to make $5.25 million this season. His total contract buyout as of Dec. 1, 2021 is $19.9 million.

I think we get them all on one staph. We getting errrybody.

I’ve stayed away from inquiring about it on my end. I’ve been thinking that it will take getting knocked out of the Coastal race, a loss to FSU or a bad humiliating loss to any of these teams ahead on the schedule. We’ll see what happens today.

Didn’t someone comment in one of the threads that those are the if he is fired by the school # and not the if he leaves number?
Yes. On Mario I assumed it was 1/2 the $15 million shown but I think Stoops has a newer deal. Even at 1/2 of this amount, I don’t see it for Shoops.
