Cal vs Oregon

Napier
Freeze
Herman

Are 3 great options for the task of what we need to become a competitive team.

There are coaches that aren’t former Canes or don’t have any connection to Miami who are actually good, I know that’s a shock to this board but I swear, it’s not illegal to hire someone who isn’t connected to the program...

I know you’re unhappy about that but I thought some of the emails were in 2018 as well??? Either way, I’m not certain that our BOT would hire him with that out there. Just like I’d love Hugh Freeze but don’t see it on our end even though I believe our BOT can use Liberty U as cover now. Maybe something changes internally and they actually decide to make a good football decision finally.

Agreed the BOT almost certainly wouldn't take someone with either Freeze or Grudens baggage. Kiffins bad boy reputation is way overblown (no ncaa violations, he got admonished for calling Urban Meyer a cheater which happened to be 200% true). It's like the sports articles that keep saying UM has bad facilities and a poor stadium. It's not true anymore but it sells more papers to repeat the same old garbage. Herman is probably the cleanest of the bunch reputation wise and has no buyout so he'd also be the cheapest. I don't like the idea of paying 10-12 million to buy a HC from another program unless his name is Nick Saban or Urban Meyer (****, the way Clemson is looking, we might get Dabo cheap lol)

I don’t like a big buy out for an average or worse game day coach. We need competence and record.

Right now? You are correct. But I think Gruden might listen in January after everything has finally blown over. I assume he doesn't want to permanently end his professional career in exile and shame. I hope he gets another chance as I think he got a raw deal. I have no issue with a guy like Paterno being scrubbed from history for his actions, but getting run out of town for emails from over a decade ago is a little ridiculous.
Gruden is a **** coach and this is coming from a Raiders fan

I'll still take him. That's a silly reason to not want a coach.
I didn't say it was the only reason to avoid him as a coach. It is one of a growing list of coaching missteps he has had in recent history. You would think that he would have spent his time at FIU ironing situational coaching out. He still makes some coaching errors that really boggle the mind at this level.

Mario is what he is.
- they are now 1-5 ATS this year. They never blow teams out. It’s what Mario wants to do.
- Justin Herbert…that is all.
- He will recruit extremely well
- He tops out at 9-3, 10-2, with a bad loss somewhere.

Is that better than what we have, sure, but I would rather take a flyer on someone who can put us over the top.
I keep thinking about Kliff Kingsbury. He was thought of as a failed College Coach at a low end power 5 school. Sample size is small but, he has the cardinals in the right direction.
Is there someone out there that can possibly strike the same way? I don’t know, I just don’t think Mario is the answer.

Herman would probably be most similar to Klingsbury. Critics say Herman's a bum because he failed at Texas (failure included a 10 win season btw). The University of Texas is a coaching trap. In the last 50 years they've managed to win only 1 championship. ONE. That's the same amount as Georgia Tech! Herman's lack of success at Texas doesn't mean much except that it has given UM an opportunity to get a good coach at a bargain basement price. Are there better coaches? Probably but I don't see any great ones that are likely to be available and we shouldn't spend 12 million on an average coach. From a pure value standpoint, Herman is the best choice, IMO. Give him all that extra $$$ to hire a top staff instead.

Joe Brady would be interesting in that Kliff Kingsbury-esque regard imo.

Certainly an interesting option.
Is Miami also a trap? I think people are more aware of the Miami shortcomings, I guess.
I wouldn’t hate it, I don’t think. There should be some good options, that at least get interviews, it the reality is the next guy we hire is probably getting fired at or before year 5 anyway, so why not swing for someone who does something in an elite way.
Coaching carousels feel like the NFL draft in terms of crapshoot value/bust rate.

So many are against the first time head coach, and I think I am too, but his football intelligence is undeniable. I would rather take him than some mentioned. If it’s between Clawson, Chadwell and those types, I’d rather take the Brady route.
Hopefully calls to Brady, Herman, Aranda, Freeze, Mario, Fickell all actually occur this time.

Joe Brady is not going to leave the NFL.

He hated recruiting and all the political stuff of a college job. I think he will be a HC in a couple of years.
Noted, I will happily keep my fingers crossed for Minnesota to hire him if they ever wake up and get zimmer and clown *** spielman outta there lol

I want Mario, don’t get me wrong, but one thing that worries me is that he seems pretty conservative with the offense. Just like Mark Stoops.

What’s the point of recruiting elite WR and TE if you can’t air it out and give them the ball? Maybe it’s just a QB problem, but still...

Right now Freeze is my #1
