By the Numbers: Grading Out last night

Nothing about those ratings reflect what I saw last night. And if they don’t respect Gary Payton’s D then their system is broken.

When...

Cam'Ron Harris - 86.2 (15)
DeeJay Dallas - 72.5 (56)

...are your best players and they get 24 total touches. They were averaging over six yards per touch in the game.

Should have ridden them the entire fourth quarter.
UF was selling out on run in 2nd half.

For those who were questioning Patchan - do you see that rating?

Jordan got beat inside in some crucial run blocks. That I did notice. It’s tough to ask him to block Zuniga and Greenard and keep them from penetrating and blowing up a running play. Should have cut their legs. Why are we the only team that doesn’t do this well?

Guys theses grades are very detailed. Coaches are looking at proper steps. Assignments responsibilities etc...therefore you can have good highlights on offense but did you pick up the blitzer in a certain formation? Or did you run the right route in a certain play? Did you stunt or blitz in the right gap? Alll of these things factor in grading. So highlights or good plays by a player can be misleading based on what their position coach is looking for. This is how the grading system works

Anybody who puts any weight into PFF's grading, especially at the college level is doing it wrong.

It's completely subjective and even they admit they don't know what a player's assignment is on a particular play. They're just guessing

Just a general question. Who does this PFF rating? And if its done on the outside, how do the know the coaches intended assignments and responsibilities?

I believe ex players, coaches, scouts. Plenty of NFL teams have usedtheir services.

And yeah we might be a muffed punt away from winning that opening game but it didn't look like our defense was ready to be physical the way it needed to be. And those numbers with our linebackers prove it

That's probably the best point I've seen here since the game ended. Florida's offensive style and personnel allowed our defense to be in chase mode. We do fine in run and chase mode. But it masks the weaknesses we have against physical opponents. Our results yesterday against the run literally mean nothing. There are going to be many games or segments of games with the defensive tackles exposed and wide open gaps up the interior, like we're playing with 10 men out there.

A blind man could see when we go 4-2-5 base vs 4 wide and a back that our LBs were EXTREMELY outmatched in space like always. That’s not their game and never will be

Not a big believer either way on these stats but just saw this one posted about Jarren:

Plenty of teams at many levels use their services for the raw data. Even division 2 teams today often have their own analytics people and they by no means are trusting the ratings of people who don’t know what the assignments are. A guy in another thread in this explained his friend worked analytics at a division 3 team and PFF was “in the ballpark” of their ratings.

PFF also at one point had a Bangladeshi doing offensive linemen ratings. TJ Lang and Chip Kelly have both called their system garbage.

PFF is great at aggregating data that teams will pay for. They are not a rating system any team staffed with people who understand football would use.
