Butch vs Lame Kitten

I went to this game last year, and it was a laughably entertaining 33-31 game. I'd go again if our game wasn't the same day. Since it's at Boca, I think FAU wins it easily.

Butch lost to football juggernaut Old Dominion last week. Not sure how he managed to beat Marshall before that..

I don't hate Butch for leaving, I hate the blind loyalty that some of our fans give him. Often ignored is the fact that recruiting in Miami was way easier when an unprecedented 4 National Championships were won within a recruit's lifetime. Assuming Butch would have the same kind of success today is absurd. People claiming Butch is better than Richt can kick rocks. Yes, Butch put Santana Moss on a track schollie, but the NCAA has since caught on. Meanwhile, Richt recruited some amazing talent surrounded by the top schools in the country within a 100 mile radius of him. Who is within 100 miles of Miami?

He did the same thing at UNC. The man knows how to recruit good players.
 
Too bad FAU doesn't play FSU or UF this year like they did several times in the past decade. They'd beat either right now and lay a black mark on either program. FIU is much improved this year, but FAU's won 6 straight and is the better team IMHO.

I never said he was bad at recruiting. Of course he has talent in that aspect, however, so does Richt. As far as doing the "same thing" at UNC, no. No he didn't. People give credit to Butch for nabbing that insane class of players that got drafted in the early 2000s. UNC's classes didn't come close to that. To my point, put Richt in the HC spot circa 1995-2000 and I predict those results get replicated. Heck, I also would argue he could replicate Butch's results at UNC, if not surpass them.

Given the ND win we have better stuff to talk about but what the heck. I agree that Butch's NC talent did not touch what he did at THE U. But neither has all Marks years at UGA. Mark will eventually do better here than he did at UGA. Miami is Miami. Butch clearly has a talent for talent evaluation and since he was also Johnson's recruiting co-coordinator all but one of our NC teams were at least partly his work. I believe we are going to win the NC this year so that will no longer be true and Mark's place in the sun will be assured. However, the magic of the combination of Miami and Butch when it comes to talent acquisition is beyond a question and should not be denied him. Coaching is another matter. The good news we are about to rise back to the top and that is what matters. Mark will deserve and get the credit for that.

Noone thinks you said he was bad at it, but you're acting like he can't recruit outside of Miami or in this period of time under the current rules. You're discrediting that unc team like it was nothing. If not for the investigation/firing of Davis, that team was primed to hit the national stage as a legit championship contender. With something like 13 starters suspended, they still almost beat a really good lsu team (lost on a dropped pass to a tight end that should have been a pi). He might not recreate the 2001 canes at unc, but he made a contender at a school that was duke level bad and not located in South Florida. The only reason they have been even a little relevant is the talent he brought in there. Look at unc now. His recruiting at unc was not that long ago, within the last 10 years.

People are not expecting the goat team again from Butch. People just believe in his ability to evaluate, recruit and develop. People believe he could create a contender at any semi decent P5 school.
