Butch History

To those who bring up Butch not getting hired for any coaching jobs since he was scapegoated at UNC, how many vacancies has he actively pursued since he was fired? I am curious to know, because I do not recall hearing much about him going after many other jobs, not even at a lower level school, where I'm pretty sure he could easily be hired. If I am wrong then let me know.

Butch might still be getting paid by Tampa Bay. Remember he was on Schiano's staff and if I recall correctly his release from UNC stipulated he couldn't be a head coach for a certain period of time.

Listen there is no doubt Butch is the best talent elevator ever and could do great things at Miami.

Butch proved that in Miami you dont need to be a great game day coach if you can get the kids that matter and there is no other place in the world that has as many top notch D1 players as they do in the Miami area. That is without a doubt the one huge advantage that Miami has over every single other program in the world.

That's the blueprint every coach should follow and the next three coaches basically had no eye for talent whatsoever.

Butch did the same thing at UNC but without the regional advantage he could never build the depth.

I always laugh when people say Golden had 7 legit pro players last year and couldn't win. Butch would have 7 legit pro players that no one recruited and twice as many other legit pro players that people did recruit hard. Butch would have more first rounders than Golden had NFLers.

Wihtout any other considerations Butch would be the perfect fit to bring Miami back. I would be willing to deal with his vanilla Xs and Os because in Miami that can work. His depth made Miami practices the best place on earth to get better. If you wanted to start at Miami you had to walk thru a mine field every day in practice so by game time it was easy. Butch teams played mean as **** and they abused their opponents.

Butch was fired in 2011 and he has been looking for a head gig ever since he was fired. Butch would also come in on the cheap. So whats the problem? Many people on this board say nothing but two things. "Fire Golden" and "Hire Butch" But do they ever ask themselves what the problem is?

When Butch left Miami he left a lot of people ****ed off. Many of our boosters still remember that and they still hold a grudge against him.

Also while Butch was not directly linked to the NCAA scandal by the NCAA it is clear in the court of public opinion that he did nothing to avoid it.

One of their biggest faults was that UNC was not forthcoming during the investigation. The school knows more than the NCAA does. Butch was fired and Williams was not.

Former players have come out and stated that Butch did know and didn't care and one of those very same players told the media that not only did Butch know he told them that if they came to UNC for academics then they should have gone to Harvard. Butch Davis himself does not deny making that statement in fact he admits it.

Miami's administration is about as gun shy as any other administration in the country and they are **** bent on selling Miami to the world as an academic institution.

That makes Butch Davis about as unlikely as a candidate for this job as any other candidate in the world.

Until you talk to some of our former Pro Bowlers. They've said when he came and talked to them, he convinced you that he really needed you. That the team really needed you, and that with you, they would do bigger and greater things.

Thing is, Butch Davis wasn't bull********.

But the perception to the public was that he was a better talent evaluator than recruiter. That's because he was down 31 scholarships, and couldn't compete with teams able to recruit full rosters - so he had to be very, very careful in each and every selection.

This mindset is why he'd dominate here at the U. He's already learned the lessons, seen them proven, and wants in the game.

Any BOT member that questions Butch - he's got the paperwork. He was clean.

Tell me what his recruiting classes ranked while at UM and UNC?

A good recruiter goes into the home of a kid who has offers from and the coaches on their everyday jocks from Alabama, FSU, Ohio State and Florida and convinces them to come to the U. That leaves them a with a top ranked class year in and year out. Which Butch did not have.

Butch was going into the homes of guys like Portis who only had a Miss State offer and was ignored by Florida and Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne who had squat for offers and gets a guy from JC in Shockey that no one wanted and then some dude named Ed Reed who only had a Tulane and a Grambling State offer and gets them to come to the U. It don't take much to get those guys to come to the U in those circumstances. Not saying Butch doesnt talk em up and make em feel invincible but its the difference between a talent evaluator and a recruiter.

I know its hard to distinguish the difference but those guys all turn out to be Pro bowler or even Hall of Famers but that doesn't mean that their was big recruiting battles for them.

Any coach is going to have a top 25 class at Miami but how much talent is in those classes can only be seen on the field. So many people want to blame coaches for situations like Howard but the truth is many kids peek in high school and a good talent evaluator finds kids whose ceiling still have a ways to go.

Butch is praying that the NCAA gets this latest case against UNC wrapped up before Folden gets fired.

I know he wasn't implicated in the previous investigation, but they're going in again on a lot of the same sort of stuff involving academics. It would take a tremendous leap of faith for anyone to hire him before the latest NCAA investigation is over.
