Butch Davis

The game has changed since then

Lol ........ole boy BD had UNCs defense with hella nfl prospects, without suspensiong they win the ACC that year. N they still gave LSU **** who was loaded n i believe played for the title that year.

Pretty sure it was the next year LSU WENT 2011. It was Auburn Oregon that year

U may be right but LSu is LSu. Imagine he did that at UNC......................UNc

guys stop living in the past even with the coaches....Butch will never get an offer dont need dirty laundry around the program i think we have been down that path already.

I agree, and that is what is so sad. We just got our *** whipped by a squad that decided to put dirty laundry in the past and give a second chance. Players get them all the time..and Butch actually had ZERO proven allegations against HIM. Sure, maybe that's a technicality, but even the most arduous anti-Butch Cane has to see the benefit of mending fences with this guy. Unless you believe he simply can't do it anymore, there can't be anybody that would have the incentive and desire to win here more than Butch...he knows leaving was the wrong choice, despite the contract quibbling.

UM

If I am Blake James, I've already had a friendly coffee with Butch.

Like the Lousiville AD and Petrino, just to see how he is doing. Make sure he and his family are doing ok.

Yes, Butch is not coming back here. Butch TORCHED bridges to UM when he left. He then was HC during one of the biggest NCAA academic fraud scandals in College Football history. He also hired John Blake who blew up into another scandal.

There is a reason why Butch hasn't landed another gig.

UM is on probation RIGHT NOW. And just came off of the longest, and one of the ugliest NCAA scandal's and investigations from a PR standpoint in NCAA history. There is NO F*CKING WAY Donna Shalala, that puts the image of UM and its academic reputation as the absolute TOP priority, is going to hire Butch who had to leave UNC after a nasty scandal.

People need to get real. Any new HC here is going to be another "up and coming" guy like Al Golden.

Don't disagree. Although, I think the "burned bridges" issue is a bit childish. Not on your part, but on any UM personnel holding a grudge for a guy bolting for the NFL.

Welcome to Division I football.

But Butch would win and win big. And winning has a way of making all parties get along.

Exactly, it is business. UM dealt with his agent, couldn't agree on long range terms like buy out (if Butch's story is accurate)...Butch goes another direction. I will NEVER believe that Butch preferred to go to the Browns over UM meeting his contract demands.

I was a spurned ***** back then as well...just calling Butch a liar, etc...but when you look back without emotion, it really makes sense. Butch built something that maybe hasn't ever been matched in terms of sheer roster talent after coming on board during a time when most pundits said we wouldn't recover for at least a decade. He got screwed out of a National Championship game in 2000 that he knew UM deserved, ***** slapped hated rival U*** in the sugar bowl, and wanted to be compensated accordingly...

Call it ego, whatever, but he was right....and UM should have made every effort to keep him. If we keep Butch, where are we in (assuming he stuck) in 2003-2007? Does a guy like butch let our recruiting and place in college football fall apart? Who knows. Probably likely he takes a better NFL gig sometime soon....but there is no denying that when the top coaching salaries were still in the reasonable range...UM chose to go cheap and "reward"...comfort zone was all that mattered without an eye to the future.

I have no problem going the aggressive "up and comer" route at all with a Pruitt type, but NOTHING UM has done in the last 3 coaching searches gives me the impression that they will be willing to get serious and pay what is necessary to really get serious...NOTHING.

If Butch remains unemployed, if and when the love affair between Shalala and Golden ends (as forced by the outrage), he would likely be a very solid choice if saving a few bucks is a necessary concern. It will be high time to put the past behind for the betterment of the football program....no consideration would be exactly short sighted and childish.

UM

Do you not know history of UM and who the **** our president is?

Do you also know that Butch got blamed for all the UNC stuff and that is why he is not coaching college football right now.

Shalalalalala wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole, not her prized university

Actually, Butch was personally cleared by the NCAA of all wrongdoing in regards to the academic scandal.

And you're a ******. He was consistently looking for a new job and no one was giving him a chance. Cleared or not.

lol, Jesus. I'm a ****** for stating a fact?

Just because he was cleared does not clear the way people view him. How do I know this? I went to Carolina when he was the coach and keep up with Carolina sports. You can clear a coach all you want, but if this kind of stuff goes on while you're the coach, it's going to leave a stain.

And if you don't realize that, open your eyes. This reason is why he was not hired when there was 4-5 openings last year and he is now a broadcaster instead.

So forget your facts and ask around. If other schools aren't going to take a chance on him, Shalalalalalla definitely isn't.

There have been many "stained" coaches that returned to college football: Petrino, The Pirate, Kiffin, Neweasel. Butch's positives far outweigh his baggage.

Maybe at a program like UL, or some SEC diploma mill that only cares about winning. UM's administration cares about the schools reputation, and after the NCAA mess, and being on probation, the LAST person they are going to hire is an HC that was forced out after a huge NCAA scandal. That is to say NOTHING of the bridges he burned with the way he left here.

I just don't see any way in this universe that Donna Shalala would hire Butch Davis. People just need to face that reality.

Donna has a boss too. The BOT needs to grow a pair.

He was proven to have NOTHING to do with the crap at UNC....I live close by the UNC campus and I have heard EVERY angle of the UNC story, he was never mentioned.

You may be right man. And I don't actually think they will bring Butch back

...But FSU just helped cover up a alleged rape. Louisville overlooked all the baggage with Petrino (including his previous persistent flirting with job offers), PSU is only a couple years removed from massive child rape scandal.

And do you hear any of this from sports media?

Bring Butch back. Let the bobbeheads wag their fingers and raise questions upfront.

Because once we start winning again, and money starts flowing into the school and we are filling seats, and UM-FSU is the hottest ticket in America again, and suddenly there is more money in the athletic dept. budget for things like womans underwater lacross, all the finger-wagging will be nothing but sound and fury...signifying nothing.

That they couldn't tie him to anything, is not going to matter much when it comes to public perception. Remember that Butch was also HC when the John Blake scandal blew up too. Any way you cut it, he is tainted. And this program is on probation, coming off one of the UGLIEST NCAA scandals in modern football history. Again, another program, like UL, that doesn't give a f*Ck, would take a chance. Shalala and the BOT are very sensitive to the perception of UM, and its academic reputation that they have worked hard to improve. They aren't going to risk all that by hiring Butch.

Do you all think, that if for ONE minute, Butch and his agent thought UM would be receptive, that he would have been on national TV all but BEGGING to be considered here if AG had taken PSU?

To me, that says that not only has he been told "never going to happen" but they probably wont even take his calls.

Look, I would love NOTHING MORE than to have Butch back. But people just need to face reality and stop setting yourselves up for disappointment. Its not going to happen. Shalala is not going to allow it, and the BOT is never going to pressure her on something like that. Frankly most of them barely care about football. UM is not in the SEC. Its an international private university in a diverse city, with alumni from all over. Its not some big state diploma mill rah rah football school. The administration is not going to gamble or soil itself for success on the football field.

Dude you are trying to convince the wrong person. I would LOVE to have Butch back. But I accepted a long time ago that its never going to happen. EVERYTHING that anyone can possibly know about Donna Shalala indicates that there is NO chance in **** she would ever hire Butch back. I would LOVE to be wrong on this, but Ive heard from too many people over the years close to people in the Admin and BOT that Butch is just radioactive and unemployable by UM again.

some of the talk radio coaches hates butch. orlando is like ripping me saying that butch is a a liar and didnt do anything at UNC. unc was horrible before him. Besides that one losing season, butch was at least 9-3 every year which is goldens and shannons best and he had to basically start from scratch. i would like him or stoops.
UNC was never better than 8-5 when Butch was there.

Butch had to start where from scratch? Here? LOL WUT? Come on dude. I love Butch too, but lets not re-write history. Butch had to deal with the sanctions, but Butch took over a team that had just played Nebraska in the OB. Wasn't like there was no talent on that team. And Butch was playing the Big East too. Still regularly lost games to VT, East Carolina, and other games he had no business losing. Remember "Botch Davis"? "National Champs to National Chumps". Butch took his lumps and had a learning curve too. And he didn't take over some team full of scrubs and "started from scratch". Butch inherited a team with Ray Lewis, Kenard Lang, Kenny Holmes, Yatil Green, Jammi German, Tony Gaiter, Danyell Fergueson, Magic Benton, and a bunch of other talented guys.
