he hasn't really improved as a game day coach after his years in cleveland and unc, so at this point i don't think he really has it in him. talent can only go so far, and butch's strength was finding players that were overlooked and developing them. modern recruiting and the camp circuit brings more exposure to the hidden players that he used to be able to snag (ed reed being the most notable). so that advantage is off the table.
i never said coker was a coaching genius, but i don't think butch's on-field coaching was better than him by leaps and bounds. there's no question that davis would have won in 2001, and probably would have repeated in 2002 on talent alone, but you can't project that he would've sustained that with all of the other factors that go into winning titles in college ball.
also, if you honestly think that saban just gets great players and that's the only reason they win, you have no idea what you're talking about. if all you had to do is gather talent, coker would've won at least 2 more.
