Butch Davis was the Right Choice

Why? He has won more than 9 games once. That's unacceptable around here. Lol we would have the same record with Butch with this team. Only people that want Butch coaching anything is nostalgic Miami fans. He will never coach here again. Let it go.

I was one of those nostalgic people for sure.

It should of been him but we talking bout Miami now .......i would of liked Herman alot

herman was never coming here people

just stop

If Miami had taken the 20 million that they gave Richt over five years and offered it to Herman over three, you think he would've turned that down?

7 mil a year for three years. Kick *** with South Florida athletes and then go the NFL.

Boom.

I hate to break it to the board but after Herman's extension last year, his base salary is still around $3MM. Currently, Richt's base salary is $4MM.

If Miami was serious, they could have made Herman their number one priority. They could have at least offered him Richt's money (which is more than Houston). They should have offered him at least $5MM as a base salary.

I don't see Herman turning down a base of that amount and a serious offer last year.

I'm pretty sure Houston was set on joining the Big 12. If they did Herman gets a 2.5Mil bonus each year bumping his salary to 5.5 Mil. Not sure he was answering calls last year.

So stupid. He's the same guy Rick is except he's 10 years older. Both guys need a significant talent advantage to beat anyone. Both are ultra-conservative.

I basically agree but there are two major differences.

1 - Butch has a much, much better eye for talent. Look at Richt's classes at Georgia. Almost none of the lower rated guys panned out. Butch was a master at finding 3 star guys with raw skills and then coaching them up into studs.

2 - Balls. Butch has balls. Richt does not.

Have you ever seen Richt get on a guy on the sidelines? Over anything? We had like three horrible late QB hit penalties vs VT. Did Richt scold any of the guys responsible after they got back on the sidelines? Nope. What he did do was give our kicker a big hug and smile after he missed an extra point.

Compare that to Butch who players were terrified of and who wanted to rip Sebastian's head off for that penalty in the Sugar Bowl.

Wait a minute.....are you saying Butch has balls because he wanted to go after Sebastian ?? Because of sideline demeanor ??
I'm as big a Butch fan as anybody for what he did for the program but thats just dumb.
The truth is he was extremely conservative so he like NEVER went for it on fourth down so you could make the argument that Butch had no balls at all.

Me personally I would have made Herman turn me down.
He was what I think UM needed. Accending coach with actual accomplishments.
I'm a fan of Butch but all he's flaws are real and to think he could replicate what happened the first time was unrealistic to me.
Ritch is what he is...he is a professional coach and over the life of he's contract I believe the program will be managed better than it has been for the last decade.
So the optimist in me hopes that Ritch will incrementally improve the program the point of top 15 consistancy and by the time we get to do this search thing again we will be in great shape.
The pessimist in me knows Ritch is it until he choses to retire so it better work.

So Butch "NEVER" went for it on 4th down?

He did 15 times in 2000...

Y'all must be too young to remember or just have bad memories but Butch wasn't a winner, he had the one 11 win season with us and that's it, ya he put together great collections of talent, but under his watch he only ever had one good season, in fact he had some down right terrible ones, I actually remember thinking, wow Butch just single handily lost us a handful of games, just like we are about Richt right now.

Lulz @ another Butch Davis thread. You'll cowards stay leaving in the past yearning for an irrelevant studio analyst that hasn't done **** on the field in 15 years.

How easily some of you forget how he handled the Browns job: Butch League Butch Davis left Miami scrambling when he betrayed his players and bolted for a big-money deal with the Browns

How easily some of you forget how he conducted himself after Sean Taylor Da Gawwwwwwwwwwwd died.

Look at the 1997 Canes: Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, Bubba Franks, Santana Moss, Damione Lewis, Dan Morgan, Duane Starks, Nate Webster...how does he go 5-6?

Look at the 2010 Tar Heels: 12 players invited to the NFL combine, 9 players drafted, tied for most with USC in the 2011 draft. Butch led UNC to an 8-5 record, 4-4 in the ACC. More Butch underachievement.

Butch Davis is another underachieving coRch that gets constantly white knighted for something he did 15 years ago. He hasn't done **** since.

Miami needs a young coAch that change the way Miami football is played. Not some older, washed up, run of the mill coRch.

Butch couldn't do any better with this bunch than Richt. Thursday just confirmed what we thought before the season.....this OL is garbage and our depth is paper thin....Some of you need to come off the ledge. Things will get better.....but right now, the talent overall, isn't where it needs to be.

I don't care about David yelling at players. Means nothing unless it leads to more wins. He's the best evaluator/developer of talent ever. However, dudes on here have built him into some sort of deity when the facts speak differently.

We gotta have the most stuck-in-the-past, non-progressive fanbase in the country.

Yeah, let's hire old a$$ Butch Davis cause he was able to assemble a good team almost two decades ago.

We want the guy who under-achieved at UNC (Butch) but we won't even consider the guy who has UNC over-achieving currently. (Fedora) Awesome logic.

I got an idea. How 'bout we be progressive and sign one of these young innovative guys that are raping defenses on a weekly basis with kids who won't even sniff the NFL?

People didn't want Fuente cause he coached at Memphis and "never beat anybody big", yet he's the only reason Memphis was even relevant to begin with. Same thing applies to Herman, Babers, Fedora, etc.

There's young, energetic, innovative coaches out there that are over-achieving with what they have and nobody around here wants them...but we'll take an old retread all day. SMH
We love nostalgia around this *****.

I still do not understand why so many people want a coach that the other >100 FBS programs don't want . If Butch is such a good coach, why hasn't any other program picked him up?

He had his opportunity but he chose the Cleveland Browns.

Well said. Are we forgetting Butch bailed out to go to Cleveland. Are we forgetting his issues at NC?

That's false. He made the worst evaluation in the history of college football by leaving the 2001 Miami Hurricanes for the ******* browns. One of the worst programs ever. Then he drafted willie green over portis.

U mean like Fuente who lost to Navy last year or Herman who lost to Navy this year? No, what we need is someone who knows how to win at Miami. We need someone who can take not only elite kids but kids who some coaches don't want and make them 1st round level talent; which in turn creates what we saw from 2000-2002. Those were Butch's players and that was Butch's development. All y'all haters love to talk about how many years it took and how he underachieved until then, conveniently forgetting he was dealt the 2nd harshest penalties to date; only worse was the death penalty.
U shook and look ridiculous B.

You think Fuente or Herman loses to Navy if he's at Miami?

Yall always point to these occasional losses to inferior opponents, as if NOBODY in the coaching world ever slips up. Even Saban and Meyer have lost to teams they weren't supposed to. Fuente and Herman were/are the only reasons their teams are even relevant. You wouldn't be talking about Memphis or Houston if it wasn't for those guys.

You don't have to like their choice (through 7 games, lol) but an administration who buys out Al Golden and then spends $4 million/yr on Mark Richt and invests in an IPS is trying to win.

Fair enough. I didn't look it up before saying that.
I was trying to make the general point that superficial thing like sideline demeanor are not a true indicator of "balls".
