If this is approached as a purely business decision - hiring the best proven performer with the greatest track record - for the money, then it's Butch Davis - hands down.

I was a huge supporter of Butch when he was here. He did an incredible job building a dynasty. The funny thing is idiotic fans flew a banner when he was coach and he was unmercifully crucified on the Grassy board back then. Sound familiar. It is funny to hear so many wanting him back when if they weren't 6 or 7 years old back in the late 90's they would have been calling for his head then.
And the fans were right about flying banners for Coker and Shannon. What's your point? Butch actually trended up as a coach and didn't bull**** and lie to the fans about the defense and his staff. He went 5-6 with a roster of 54 or less scholarship players while Golden is sitting at an ugly 4-3 with a roster of studs being misused by a largely inept coaching staff. The 2014 team's talent is better than 4 of the 6 teams Butch had while here and yet Golden is sitting pretty at a likely 6-6 record.
The two situations are hardly similar. Butch's team improved from a talent, coaching, and all around developmental standpoint while Golden's are increasing with talent and decreasing in everything else. Improvement as a team against solid competition was evident, in spite of his occasional missteps like ECU. But if you can tell me that Golden has this team improving to the caliber of an elite team, you are blind.
As far as the fans calling for Butch's head, that's when we were at our worst and expected national championships when he only had 50 real players to work with. Butch never tried to run off to another school and he went to the NFL like all our good coaches do and we don't exactly crucify Jimmy and Dennis for it. The only knock on Butch in that scenario is that he left it late in the game after saying he wouldn't leave. He left us the greatest roster in college history and a halfway decent hire would have kept the train chugging along smoothly.
Bottom line, for all the Miami specifics surrounding the job, I see hiring Butch as a hire that would make us dominant again. I don't see Golden ever getting us to that plateau.

biggest misconception ever and it's really amazing how many people keep repeating it over and over. Butch lost 31 scholarships over 3 years but the total scholarship limit on Miami during that entire period was 80. So that meant although Butch couldn't offer 25 schollies on signing day come fall practice he was able to offer schollies as long as the kid was in school. That's how he got Santana on a track scholly, Joaquain on a academic scholly, King and Kelly as walk ons paying their way in etc. and then switching them over to football schollies. The lowest amount of scholarship players Butch ever had was low 70's. Not saying his job was easy (it definitely made them have to work harder to find guys willing to accommodate the ****ty circumstance) but Butch and Pete cheated the *** out the system. Good for them by the way for not just cowering in a corner and using it as an excuse or "cloud", but he never dealt w/ USC type depth issues.
Anyway don't want to stop your overall point (although I think 4 of 6 is a reach imo) just don't want people to keep saying that because it makes me think that they really weren't around or paying attention to those teams.

You could not be more wrong.
Miami only had 58 scholarship players in 1997. And that included giving Santana Moss a football ship during the season.
What Butch Davis accomplished at Miami was remarkable.

I know it's easy to forget a lot of the players that were on the roster in 97 because it had quite a few jags, but there were more than 58 scholarship players. Here's the official roster http://www.hurricanesports.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=658368&SPID=103763&DB_OEM_ID=28700&Q_SEASON=1997 of those 90 or so players only about 18/19 were walkons and that's including Zac Hart and Will P. who got full schollies the next summer. I know it's hard to remember guys like Binion, Bippen, Tavokius Bonner, Cliff Jackson, Jason McCullough, Damond Neely, etc. because they didn't become all world players here but they were on scholarship. Just like kids like Steve Kelly who ended up bouncing or Dan Smith who was doing the two sport stuff like quite a few of the kids Butch brought in during that time and decided to just play baseball full time after a couple seasons. As someone who was coming out of HS around the time this was going on and talk to Butch,Chuck, and other players on the team and players being recruited during that time I know some of the stuff they were selling some kids. Players who were good but not quite Parade All everythings and could get into UM through other means they were selling that **** like hotcakes.
Heck even Pual Dee admitted that Butch and them boys worked in the gray box since they weren't hit with a severe cap limit.
The NCAA sanctions on Miami meant that its recruiting classes over a three-year period were reduced by a potential of 31 scholarships -- a loss of seven in 1995, 13 the following year, and 11 the year after that.
But the NCAA did not place a low ceiling on the number of total scholarships the team could offer to all players. The infractions committee set a cap of 80 total scholarships, just five below the NCAA maximum.
The smaller recruiting classes ended up having the effect of reducing the overall number of total scholarship players for a while. At one point, the team had as few as 70 players on scholarship, Dee said. But without an onerous cap on total scholarships, Miami was able to use a variety of creative strategies to build their total numbers back up and make the team competitive again.

like I said before it doesn't mean they didn't still work their azzes or that Butch didn't do a **** of a job spotting talent regardless of the scholly numbers, but sorry we didn't run out there with 50, 54, or 58 players. **** Butch and Miami are the reason why football is the end all be all scholarship now regardless of what else you play, because Butch and Pete spit in the face of the NCAA and circumvented the rules like a **** and bravo to them for doing it.
btw Santana got his scholarship as part of that lil loop hole.
