Butch Davis wants to get back into coaching

I really really do not see the fascination with Butch. He'd be better than Al but I bet we wouldn't win any championships in the immediate future under him. He's a ****ty *** gameday Coach just like Gorlden.

Ehh I'd have to disagree there.....he's a pretty good game day coach. Aggressive and took chances

Yep. People flew banners and called him "Botch" and "Freckles". No one will man up to doing all of that now, of course, but people were more than happy to get rid of him between 2000 and 2001.

It's perfectly fine to appreciate what he did and hope that he comes back, because he built a champion, but no one seems to remember doing any of that bashing when he was actually here.

I called him "Botch" and "Freckles" and thought that he was an abortion on game day, but, outside of pipe dream hires like Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh..., he is the safest hire UM could make given his track record of building a power house here and recruiting some **** good players at UNC.

Seriously? He left between the 2000 and 2001 seasons, and people were happy to get rid of him. Not sure how that was confusing.

Cant compare people bashing butch in the 90s to people bashing grohlden

One was a coach who was working through crippling sanctions, with 1 losing season to a rabid fan base too used to national titles and 10 win years

..another was a corch who was working through SELF PERCIEVED crippling sanctions, and has failed to win more than 9 games and is corching up the worst defenses in school history, and has a fan base who has been kicked down by failure admins for almost 12 years

I'm about as on the Butch Davis bandwagon as you can be, but I'd be willing to hear other candidates.

We always say that we want players that want to be Hurricanes and for the last two hires we've struggled to find coaches that want to be Hurricanes. Now you have Butch who is essentially begging to come back here and people are holding his early coaching deficiencies against him. I was 5 years old when the banner flew for him but everything I've been told and read is that he grew year to year as a gameday coach. He made the needed changes to his staff when the time called for it. He's the best local recruiter we've ever had and he landed the out of state studs as well like DJ Williams and he scoured the JUCO ranks to get the Jeremy Shockey's and the Bryant McKinnie's of the world.

He was on the cusp of replicating that success in North Carolina and if his eye for player talent, coaching talent, and his ability to recruit/develop talent is half as good as it was when he was here, he would be homerun hire when coupled with how is gameday coaching has progressed.

After Butch's final year there, UNC had 12 players invited to the combine (most in the NATION....UNC!) and 9 drafted (tied with USC for most). 5 were taken in the top 100 picks, and 4 of those missed all or most of that year due to suspension. The man stockpiles talent like nobody's business and would get us back to our attacking 4-3 roots. He's just sitting there waiting for us to make the call.

I was scared sh*tless when he left after the Sugar Bowl in 2000.... I thought "great we are finally back to winning and getting things under control and now this happens"

we would have a MNC level roster within 2-3 years if we hired Butch. there is no doubt.

might he drop a game that he shouldnt? sure. but look where we are now. jesus. we are DOA with the current staff.

I pray to god that *** is fired and Butch hired immediately. eventually the 2015 recruiting class is gonna start tanking with the ****** season that we are having (and it will get worse)

No one was happy he left, he doesn't know what the **** he is talking about.

We probably win 3 out of the next 5 championships (who knows, maybe more) if Butch stays.

I believe we still win 2001 and 2002 if Butch had stayed. Things started going down hill once Clappy lost control of the team and the Butch talent train dried up. We probably have at least 2 to 3 more titles had Butch remained.
