Butch Davis- Miami Coached First Rounders (28)

I'll tell you one thing we wouldn't be seeing with Butch as HC, and that's Calloway, Powell, Michel, Cook, Amari Cooper, Ridley, Rudolph, and all the other monster players from our backyard destroying **** at other programs.

Imagine that talent with what we have now, Oh my.

Miami: Ray Lewis (LB), Yatil Green (WR), Kenard Lang (DE), Kenny Holmes (DE), Duane Starks (CB), Edgerrin James (RB), Bubba Franks (TE), Dan Morgan (LB), Damion Lewis (DT), Santana Moss (WR), Reggie Wayne (WR), Bryant McKinnie (OT), Jeremy Shockey (TE), Phillip Buchannon (CB), Ed Reed (S), Mike Rumph (CB), Andre Johnson (WR), Jerome McDougle (DE, Willis McGahee (RB), William Joseph (DT), Sean Taylor (S), Kellen Winslow (TE), Jonathan Vilma (LB), D.J. Williams (LB), Vernon Carey (OT), Vince Wilfork (DT), Antrel Rolle (CB) and Kelly Jennings (CB).

How many titles did he win while coaching?
That's an asshat question right there. #BBB actually had real sanctions to face while he was here. Butch lost 31 scholarships while Gorlden only lost 9. And, don't forget that Miami was shut out of the NC game in the Orange Bowl Butch's last year here. Miami got passed over for FSU.. who Miami beat already that year. FSU scored 2 points against Oklahoma while Miami thrashed Florida.

Butch 51-20 in 5 years while losing 31 scholarships. Now go back and reread the op again. Just exactly what NC winning coach do you think is coming here?

Bunch of ******* ME players right there, get them out of my face

Regarding UNC:

"The 2007 draft, if you remember, was the one that came not long after John Bunting’s final season as UNC’s head coach. The Tar Heels finished the 2006 season 3-9, Bunting was fired and the draft illustrated one of the program’s primary problems: a clear lack of talent, at least among draft-eligible players.

Davis fixed that in a hurry. From 2008 to 2014 – Davis was the head coach from 2007 through 2010 – no school in the ACC had more players selected in the first round than UNC."

Maybe because his top 10 or so starters were suspended due to to academic scandal that had nothing to do with him? Still went toe to toe with LSU and should've won but for a BS call. GTFO.

BUTCH MUTHA****IN DAVIS *****ES!!

Moral victory champ?

So his guy who was funneling players to an agent was not Butch's fault either?

Poor Butch. Definitely cant have that guy back in that case. No accountability for his players OR his staff.

Davis was there 4 seasons, three of them had wining records. His fourth year the team started the year with 13 players suspended. He still won 8 games. Prior to him getting there UNC hadn't had a wining season since 2001. Butch posted three straight. It's one thing to turn a program around, it's another to have 6 guys drafted and still have a losing season.

I think you may be missing the point of the whole 'UNC lead the ACC in NFL 1st round picks for a few year stretch' argument. Sure, I agree, yes, we need a coach who not only can acquire talent, but coach it up and win with it. That's the goal.

But the sheer idea that a historically dominant basketball powerhouse school could, for any stretch, lead a conference in 1st round picks in the NFL, is simply amazing. Imagine, back in the day, if UNLV were to lead their conference in NFL 1st round picks for a 2 or 3 year stretch. It's weird to even think about because they (were) a b-ball powerhouse. What if Duke or Kentucky lead their respective conferences in NFL 1st round picks??? Again, it's hard to imagine because they're basketball dominated schools and always will be. So is UNC. For them to go toe to toe with the ACC recruiting powerhouses (fsu, Clem, Mia) and lead us in NFL 1st round picks is astounding. Sure UNC put some money in football, but they are a HUGE national brand in basketball...a 'USC Football or ND Football' brand but for basketball. (Not a fan...but they are a gigantic basketball brand.) For them to to outdo UM, fsu, Clem (3 of the larger NCAA football brands in the ACC) in NFL 1st round picks is amazing. No two ways about it.

Butch has an eye for talent and can coach it up. We need that.

Who cares about winning 8 games a season 4 straight years. Wasnt he in the Coastal? Shouldnt the "greatest" coach of all time atleast win the Coastal? ATLEAST!?!

You keep bringing up Al like that is some validation of anything. He sucked with NFL players as well, why the f&ck would we want another guys who did the same AND got his players in trouble by his own staff member?

SHEEED, Cutcliff wins at a basketball school, he even won the Coastal. Does that mean Cutcliff > Butch?

What DC has done at Duke is amazing...consistently winning football games at (arguably) the country's biggest basketball powerhouse school is amazing. No doubt. I don't know who would be better here, DC or Butch. If someone says they know, they're lying. But I do know we'd be very lucky to have either instead of Goldy.

For the most part, big time NCAA schools are either football strong or b-ball strong. Not both. It makes what guys like JL and Donavan (in basketball have done) and guys like what Butch and Cutcliff (in football) even more impressive. To win consistently in the 'other sport'...Duke football, or put many 1st round picks in the NFL like UNC football did, win big time champ. games (Billy while he was at uf basketball) is a testament to the coaches.

Explain why you think it is so difficult to win in multiple sports at the same time?

We won in Baseball & Football, Michigan State is constantly good in basketball & Football, Ohio State was good in basketball & Football, Notre Dame, Arizona, UCLA, Florida, Louisville, and the list goes on and on.

I like Butch, but I've yet to see a good argument why he couldn't win the Coastal with all that talent at UNC.

I'm a big baseball fan...but take that sport out of the equation. It's relavence to big time NCAA sports is nil. (MiLB dominates the semi-pro baseball scene)

But to your question, ND/AZ/UCLA/uf/UL are good in both sports? Like consistatly winning and putting many many 1st rounders (in NFL or NBA) in their sports? Really? How good is Louisville in football? I mean really? (and beating Miami doesn't count). They're good, not great. UCLA. Are they great at either sport these days? Decent...mid to upper level in the PAC 12, but not dominating. Are they? ND? Are they churning out 1st rounders (in either sport) and dominating. (Again, beating UM doesn't count.)

MSU and O$U are good examples to your point. Coaching all around those schools is elite...no doubt.

But, I still maintain, schools that dominate (In football I guess I would mean winning and/or playing for your conference's champ. game 1 out of 2 yrs. on average and winning 10-11 +- games per season & Regularly put players in NFL via 1st/2nd rd. In basketball I would clarify by meaning 25 -26 reg. season wins/regular Elite 8 + tourney trips, Conf. Champ. Tourney appearances and wins and regularly putting players in the NBA in the 1st. rd...not 2nd) are far fewer than those that do.
