Butch as Coker’s Replacement

It's true.....it's not so much the Pata Murder...it was more of the Hatred for Butch by several high ranking BOT members...even though Butch had support from several others. Stu Miller was, and still is a friend of Butch's...his Dad Leonard basically hired Butch in 95.....Paul DiMare was also a close friend of Butchs, and still is. In the end there was to much push back from the Butch Haters portion of the BOT.....

Does the name rhyme with Shmepstein?

Agree 100% right tenure was a huge success and without it we're nowhere near where we are. He is what re-awakened our program to what it's supposed to be.

That 10-0 run was magic. The Rock was insane. My ears were ringing after that game worse than after any heavy metal concert I've been to. Showed that a hot Hurricanes program has Miami and the entire nation tuned in.

What is tragic about our program is that two of the best coaches we ever had (Howard and butch) walked, away from a program on the rise. And one after wining the first NC. Either stays and arguably we have a **** ton more championships. It's as if we *were* (purposefully didn't use "are") cursed.

I know many couldn’t stand Coker but I felt he was a player’s coach and I’d have no problem also playing for him at all.

Just my personal opinion.

I say that’s true for Butch but we followed up Howard with Jimmy and we were even more dominate.

Only two problems with cmr was he was sick #1 & possibly as a result he brought on lil johnny. Couldn't expect a man to fire his own son.
At the end with CMR, do you remember in our private messages I asked if something was off with him? I didn’t think it was that (his diagnosis) but I knew something was off after a couple of interviews.

@The Franchise was actually the 1st one to comment on Richts condition. I noticed it as well, watching him on the sidelines...it was like he was in some sort of daze many times.

I didn’t discuss with Chise nor you but I figured Brook was close enough to see if he saw the same thing. I felt it was most noticeable his last season with us.

He had a snowball’s chance in **** of being hired in 2006 with Dee in charge along with the BOTs that held sway at the time.

That being said, if there was a time to rehire him, it was 2006. At that point he had not been gone from the program very long, the college football landscape was a lot different then than now, and our brand held a lot more value than it did after the subsequent coaches that failed. He would have been a relatively cheap hire too for a program that was pretty cash strapped (and cheap) at the time.

It likely would have been a relatively quick turnaround and Miami would have been “back” for at least a few years before Shapiro-gate hit.

A tired topic but Just another in a long line of “what ifs”.
One thing the current landscape should make clear is that money was starting to become a defining factor back then. There wasn’t anybody we could have hired that would have had more than a few good years without the school ponying up more money. It seems clear they weren’t going to do that, so no coach was going to win much. Yeah, Butch would have won more, but he wasn’t getting past bama and osu. I think 2008 was probably about the last year we could have been great without a ton of extra cash.

New interview in the Herald with Butch. He says UM was ready to announce him as Coker’s replacement but Pata’s death pushed it back and he took the UNC job. Is this common knowledge? Don’t remember this as most have said he wasn’t welcomed back after the way he left.

He also says they were talks with him after Richt but they made the quick move to hire CMD.

I'm glad alot of this has finally come out in total truth. Wait a second,...pay him less than the guy who left the University & Butch in a quagmire, and then in 5 yrs produces the most talented team in NCAA History???....and then get ****y when he takes a 5yr 15 million $$$ contract (with many more incentives)???....Lol....You know, kinda like what Howard and JJ did, except Butch gets no pass.
