Butch as Coker’s Replacement

Probably only one person on here that can answer that question - @SWFLHurricane
It's true.....it's not so much the Pata Murder...it was more of the Hatred for Butch by several high ranking BOT members...even though Butch had support from several others. Stu Miller was, and still is a friend of Butch's...his Dad Leonard basically hired Butch in 95.....Paul DiMare was also a close friend of Butchs, and still is. In the end there was to much push back from the Butch Haters portion of the BOT.....

Butch Davis > Larry Coker
Butch Davis > Shannon
Butch Davis > Golden
Butch Davis > Richt (Miami years)
Butch Davis > Diaz
Butch Davis at 70 < Cristobal

There were years that would have been ideal to re-hire Butch. Those years have passed.

"They offered Davis less money to stay than Erickson had made before him" --- And you wonder why our program went downhill..

To be fair..............
Zombie-Cane > Larry Coker
Zombie-Cane > Shannon
Zombie-Cane > Golden
Zombie-Cane = Richt
Zombie-Cane > Diaz
Zombie-Cane not even on the same field as Cristobal.
Butch is a legend, but pretty much any name in CFB topped most of the names above......

Pata happened in the beginning to middle of the 06 season. Coker wasn't fired then but obviously was fired later on that year. IF it would've been butchs job then, I can't imagine him not holding out on when UM was ready to announce if it was actually his or if hes full of **** or the reporter or the school was full of **** bout the entire thing.

I thought Mario was the name but UM was quick to hire Manny before Mario could even interview. im glad we didnt get butch post richt. he was done.
Mario was gonna be the oc.

New interview in the Herald with Butch. He says UM was ready to announce him as Coker’s replacement but Pata’s death pushed it back and he took the UNC job. Is this common knowledge? Don’t remember this as most have said he wasn’t welcomed back after the way he left.

He also says they were talks with him after Richt but they made the quick move to hire CMD.

The second part about talking before CMR was hired is 100% true. I’ve never been told about him coming here after Larry.

I hope he at least gets an invite to be around the program like Ed O. Would be extra awesome to have him on the staff in some capacity evaluating HS talent with Highsmith.
Mario would def bring him around but id rather have more recent coaches and recruiters around (FIU was basically a retirement tour).

Someone. Anyone make it stop.

I'm talking bout after Coker. Coincidentally that was also the plan after alfraud.
ah gotcha. that makes more sense. it kinda worked out though for Mario. he got the FIU gig soon after and got his start.

im fine with richt after golden. he wasn't a bust of a coach. just got old/burned out/sick but he did good for the program

Who's funeral was it at that Butch was recruiting for UNC? Anyone remember that story?

Only two problems with cmr was he was sick #1 & possibly as a result he brought on lil johnny. Couldn't expect a man to fire his own son.

yeah agreed on both but he still good in moving the program along and forced us to pour more resources into the program. I dont look at the richt run as a failure. now, Manny, randy, al absolutely failures (tho I wouldn't have hired Manny or randy to be HCs)

Fok this chit! Butch had the chance of building a dynasty in Miami and be saban before he became Satan and he chose the foking browns!!!!

So fok him!!!

Agree 100% right tenure was a huge success and without it we're nowhere near where we are. He is what re-awakened our program to what it's supposed to be.
