New interview in the Herald with Butch. He says UM was ready to announce him as Coker’s replacement but Pata’s death pushed it back and he took the UNC job. Is this common knowledge? Don’t remember this as most have said he wasn’t welcomed back after the way he left.

He also says they were talks with him after Richt but they made the quick move to hire CMD.

Pata happened in the beginning to middle of the 06 season. Coker wasn't fired then but obviously was fired later on that year. IF it would've been butchs job then, I can't imagine him not holding out on when UM was ready to announce if it was actually his or if hes full of **** or the reporter or the school was full of **** bout the entire thing.

I thought Mario was the name but UM was quick to hire Manny before Mario could even interview. im glad we didnt get butch post richt. he was done.

Probably only one person on here that can answer that question - @SWFLHurricane

It's possible they reached out to gauge his interest in 2006. But that doesn't mean he was sitting there ready to sign and they pulled the papers away.

Butch Davis > Larry Coker
Butch Davis > Shannon
Butch Davis > Golden
Butch Davis > Richt (Miami years)
Butch Davis > Diaz
Butch Davis at 70 < Cristobal

There were years that would have been ideal to re-hire Butch. Those years have passed.

"They offered Davis less money to stay than Erickson had made before him" --- And you wonder why our program went downhill..

Butch was hired in Chapel Hill on November 13th, 2006.

Bryan Pata was murdered November 7th, 2006.

Miami fell to 5-4 on the season after losing to Virginia Tech on November 4th, 2006—back-to-back losses after losing at Georgia Tech the week prior.

The FIU brawl was October 14th and the Canes were without a ton of players for a narrow win at Duke the following week.

Seems plausible that post-FIU the writing was on the wall to get rid of Coker—who was relieved the Friday after Thanksgiving, after eking out a Thursday win over Boston College.

Butch could've been in the cards, the Pata murder throwing things off and the North Carolina opp falling into his lap—the Heels knowing they needed to make the move when they did (as Coker was dead man walking in the coming weeks.)

Not as far-fetched as some are making it sound.

He had a snowball’s chance in **** of being hired in 2006 with Dee in charge along with the BOTs that held sway at the time.

That being said, if there was a time to rehire him, it was 2006. At that point he had not been gone from the program very long, the college football landscape was a lot different then than now, and our brand held a lot more value than it did after the subsequent coaches that failed. He would have been a relatively cheap hire too for a program that was pretty cash strapped (and cheap) at the time.

It likely would have been a relatively quick turnaround and Miami would have been “back” for at least a few years before Shapiro-gate hit.

A tired topic but Just another in a long line of “what ifs”.
