alot of radio guys say two things about butch. He was a liar and he was a horrible game day coach. However, during a rough period, i think his record was 57-21. He was 4-0 in bowl games. UNC people criticize but they literally had no football program before him. How do you guys feel about him as a game day coach?

He wasn't the best and made some simple mistakes (ex: timeouts at the end of quarters), but surrounded himself with great staff and was a solid recruiter. Butch built the greatest football team ever, so there isn't much else that could be said to convey how good he is/was.

Butch was a great evaluator , recruiter, CEO type . But mediocre game day coach , that's why he always was surrounded by great assistants .

Butch is from the Jimmy Johnson coaching tree and is a great talent spotter and developer. He wants back in at Miami and I think he should be given that chance at redemption. Noles fans were worried when the Golden to PSU **** was going on that The Butch to Miami rumor would happen for real. It is the last thing anybody outside of Miami wants, because everybody remembers the early 2000's knowing he built that team.

Butch was horrible on gameday but he developed so well that he could hide his shortcomings. The example of this was at UNC, after all those suspensions and he played LSU toe to toe with backups who later went in the first 2-3 rounds.

Miami was Butchs first HC job. I think the UCLA game was his turning point. He was much better his last 2 years. I think he inherited a much worse situation. Quite frankly, Golden has proven to just be a mid-major coach. Not a bad guy for toledo or ohio. Maybe even FIU but he is not for miami.

butch also keeps this class in tact i think. he can say "Look at the caliber of player i put in the nfl"

Meh... Under 2 mins and with 3 TO's before the half ( and with a lead ) dude would always sit in the rock... drove me nuts

i wouldnt mind giving stoops or narduzzi a shot. I am just over al golden

As was said, it was Butch's first HC job, and at first, he DID make some mistakes. But then he got really good, and in time learned to really trust his instincts and the instincts of his very talented coordinators.

A part-time friend from FSU was shaking like a dog passing a peach pit when he thought we were getting Butch again during the PSU fiasco. In fact, there were a number of people concerned we just MAY get Butch back - because they remember well what he did at the U one time already - from a much worse dumpster fire that he inherited.

Anyway, now that his contract payments are paid out, he's looking for another gig.

We'll have him as our coach, or we'll likely play against him. And that didn't turn out well for us even when he was at UNC.

I can't believe he actually WANTS to come back to the U. But, this administration won't hire him - **** - he's a proven winner. Right here.

A LOT of Butch's bad gameday coaching was due to Coker as OC. That '99 PSU game, Coker should have been strung up, for example.

Everyone is torturing themselves with this Butch pipe dream. He was an amazing talent evaluator. Forget the team he put together at Miami, he took a bunch of nobody's at unc and churned out top nfl draft picks.

Here is why Butch is never coming back:
1. He is old
2. He was the head coach at a university during a major academic scandal - career suicide
3. He lied about being interested in the browns job. Would the dolphins take Saban back?
4. Al is signed through 2019

i always said that. coker was horrible at OC. I was kind of surpsied when he got HC.

He didnt seem good gameday because he followed what may be the best run in college football history from 83-94, and he wasnt great, but compared to the last 2 cats, hes phucking bill walsh

Butch was also big part of JJ's recruiting, so he had hand in recruiting all but one of our NCs.

Seriously if we want our U back, we will have to do something drastic as fans to get him back. If its the banner, i don't know. Something that will make Shalala notice. We cant miss a 4th time in a row. We can't

And most wanted him fired because he couldn't beat Va Tech and FSU until his final year. The meltdown against ECU when they didn't have a home stadium. Looking unprepared for 3 quarters against Washington. 66-13 against Syracuse. Plenty of black marks on his Miami resume.

Does anyone think we wouldn't have won in 2001 if Butch was coaching? Likewise, anyone think Butch would have won in 2002 had he stayed?
