Unfortunately, it turns out that the Penn State treatment is "get a huge judgment levied against you that your own politically-connected cultists manage to blow up". Penn State athletics paid a smaller price for the university president and AD blessing a decades-long child rápe ring than UM did for a Benihana meal. That's a fact.
The instinct to defend the image of these large state schools is embedded into the psyche of state officials like a genital wart into the spongy tissue of a limp tallywhacker.
At the most basic level, it comes down to the large number of rabid fans that orbit programs. The state of Ohio is a shíthole backwater, but there are a **** of a lot of methhead Buckeye fans who would actually go to war for the scarlet and gray. I think of Buckeye fans like Al Qaeda, but with fewer marketable skills.
Sadly, like politics, some people adopt these institutions as their own identity. It becomes who they are as a person and they equate everything the team does as a reflection of their own self worth.
