Knowing the buzz about Butch around here, why do you guys think he's such a clear cut / deserving number one?

For him to recreate what he did is next to impossible. To recreate even half the talent he assembled should be impossible. And if he can't bring that level of talent back here, is he the X's and O's type of guy to bring us back to a ship? Especially considering how much more innovative offense's are now compared to any point he was coach (Miami or UNC).

I get the feeling Butch is a nostalgic or symbolic type pick that signifies a commitment to winning/ giving the fans what they want type of hire - but is it the best pick? He's an easy, cheap hire but is Butch really a better candidate than a Tom Herman or the like?

He had carolina on the verge of being really good before the academic scandle. Alot of the players he recruited went to the nfl.

Did you see the NFL talent he was accumulating at UNC. He was about to make them *****es a dynasty. He's like a K-Mart radio...he don't play.

As long as he makes us respectable and makes us a good team I'll be ok with it so the next coach takes over and leads us to a championship. This time he isn't going to leave us with Coker lol

He's assembled the most talented roster ever at Miami sans 30 scholarships and he assembled a quasi-NFL team at UNC in 2007-2010. You'd think 2010 was the Dark Ages by the way it's characterized here.

His evaluation of talent, his development of talent, and his evaluation of coaches are/were top notch in 2010 and I doubt he lost all of those skills in 5 years. Nobody is asking or expecting him to assemble equal talent to the 2001 team but he assembled the most talented teams in the sport at two different locations with no star recruits and he did 7 years apart. If you listen to him on the radio and on TV, he's still involved and knowledgeable about the state of college football so I doubt things like Cincinnati going tempo would come as a surprise to him.

Nobody is saying Butch is some kind of strategic genius but he's good enough and as good as it gets in terms of personnel. That combination is rare and Butch is the only person available who has done this before and is close to a, "sure fire," pick. A sure fire pick is what we need.

Tell me why it's impossible for the best evaluator in the history of the game to build another incredible roster.

Don't just tell me it's impossible trying to be the faqqy contrarian; tell me why it's impossible. Do you think he got lucky last time and followed that up by getting lucky again at UNC building the most talented roster they've ever had?

The man has a clear gift. If anything, it'll be easier to do it again because this time he'll have the benefit of busting out for recruits a giant portfolio of 1st rounders, NFL All-pros and even some HOF'ers that he produced. He didn't have that portfolio the last time he did it.

them boys flew to the football and has lsu on the ropes as in athlete for athlete, i memba watching that game and decided then that it wasnt miami it was butch.

We'll have a team that could play and usually beat - a third of the teams in the NFL.

And it's one dumba$$ assumption that Butch has either forgotten what he's known for decades, or can't somehow compete in recruiting - as that wasn't his main strength - it was talent evaluation and then development.

Ask our Probowlers over the past decade about Butch.

The very best argument I've heard is that you have to think about Miami's access to South Florida talent - the type that overwhelms the NFL. In the past 3 seasons (so this **** is really recent), South Florida has produced 57 draft picks. That's 35% more than the closest comparable area (in and around LA) and 100% more than the third area (Dallas/Ft. Worth).

What that means is that, despite having limited resources ($, alumni base, etc.), we have a distinct competitive advantage. We have to be better at maximizing that advantage. Part of that is recruiting for sure. Great recruiting begins with excellent talent evaluation. In short, we have to be able to identify the very best pieces of talent in our area. And, do it consistently. You see, even in today's day and age, with massive recruiting services and such, good players consistently get away or aren't prioritized appropriately.

I've long advocated for having Miami return to be on the cutting edge. I would love for that to be in strategy and Xs and Os. I actually believe that's more difficult than selecting a proven talent evaluator (remember, Butch Davis validated his eye for talent by amassing a unique defensive squad in UNC just before everything fell apart) and having that in an area where talent is overflowing.

In any case, I believe that's what Butch and his people should be showing the powers that be. It's the most cost-effective and efficient way to return the program. Let's put it in other terms:

Who are the Head coaching candidates who would scare UF and FSU?

Nothing lucky about what he did the first time around, I'm just looking at it purely as "can he really do it again"? I think that answer is no, due to the fact he did it perfect the first time around. Whether you think that answer is yes, just play along. If he doesn't have the talent, is he going to drum up a flawless game day strategy and win with lesser playmakers?

The stench of Golden is so heavy that we're going to have to prove to recruits that we're back not by talking a big game, but by winning the big games. Does a Tom Herman drum up the right game plan and win those big games quicker than Butch?

Because this is what our DL would look like:

He doesn't have to recreate the 2001 team. He's going to recruit this area well. We're going to get our share of local talent. He will have assistants that will develop the talent and his teams will not beat themselves. He may not out scheme you to death but his teams are disciplined. We will be in the mix every year.

Hendricks, have you heard anything from the Presidents office?

Do you still work there

Fortunately/unfortunately I graduated last year so I still have a job related to the President's Office but no longer physically there.

However, I was asked about this the other day on here and I've heard the same as Lu. For the past year his name was just kind of an outside floated name but as time has gone and it's becoming a more realistic option. I don't know who Lu's guys are but I know some the BOT I talked to and some people who were closer with other Board members Butch had some ardent, hardcore supporters amongst them.
