Brick by Brick: Zion Nelson

So has everyone else on the oline..to use your point he was the starting RG when we put up 600 yards last week lol..at one point another everyone on this line has struggled. 51 gets more **** because we all expected him to be the guy to step up the most this szn. Obviously hasn’t happened he’s had his struggles like everyone else. The only consistent performer Imo has been 62 when healthy. Zion is no longer forgetting to come out of his stance so that’s always a plus.
Showing up on campus at 240 pounds and asking to start as a true Fr while being very new to the position was beyond unfair. Shocking a kid thrown in that situation failed. Instead of making jokes about that maybe give some props.

People forget that Zion actually had some good games in 2019 despite being massively underweight.

I’m not in the business of showing sympathy. If your out there your expected to get it done. It was clear that group we put out there was indeed the best combo we had (see the Duke game) ..I give him props for getting out his stance consistently this year. He’s gotten better without question. I also recognize, this year he should be apart of the starting group as I said before. But I’m not gunna pretend he isn’t getting beat a lot on run plays. I’m not not gunna pretend he’s our best performing lineman RN when he’s not. The weakness of this line is still on the left side with 53 and 66. Hopefully Campbell is over whatever nagging leg issue he had and u can stick him back at LT and Zion back at LG for these final games. That was our best performing group without doubt

Yep. And yet when he makes the nfl in a few years, some post here will talk about we had an nfl LT in ‘19.

We have two starting OT that were 2* kids. Zion has 3 more years to play and looks like a kid that could develop into an NFL caliber player.

This is dumb *** statement. He was forced to be out there during to poor recruiting, so you can stop that.

Like Maddog Jim Mandich said of Dan Marino .

“ A FIRE BURNS IT THAT MANS HEART”

Everyone here TRASH Zion to no end , well

A FIRE BURNS AGAIN !!!

He doesn’t want or need compliments they are fleeting, just let him play and leave him alone , he’s been alone from the start here.

In my work it’s HERO TO ZERO in a second.
I ignore compliments I prefer not getting them , the score board is what I look at that’s my compliment at work.

Funny part..Nothing in that post even talks about Zion. We all agree the recruiting was poor. He was thrown into the fire. When some of y’all mofos was circle jerking about the great weight Zion had put on and his spring to fall transformation i sat back n laughed a bit..the kid should’ve been RS last year. And I thought he even should’ve been shirted this year. But he wasn’t. He was in our rotation. He has not played well consistently. Now some of y’all will be quick to bash Clark, 65 or 51 but if someone points out it’s not just them 60 is getting beat consistently on run sets and pass sets (he has gotten better) it’s “oh nah you’ve too far” ?. Nah He like the others need to play better and be consistent week to week. If not Rivers, walker and the kids we have coming in need to get rdy to go

Zion looked like he had high upside when we took him. That's why we took him despite him needing a lot of physical development.

Just highlights that looking at a kid 6 years later and noticing he's in the NFL doesn't tell you a lot about what talent he represented as, say, an undersized true frosh LT forced to start because we had no one else even capable of playing the spot.

The fan overreaction and sore feelings regarding this kid are insane.

Fact is he was recruited as a high upside developmental OT with good athleticism and length. He was forced to start at LT as a TF because the cupboard was bare. Last season he struggled mightily, especially early. This season, his play has clearly improved (moreso in pass blocking, but somewhat in run blocking, too). If he keeps improving at this rate, we'll have a pretty good starter on our hands the next couple of years. As it stands, he is one of our top 2 OL right now.

Leftmost - Zion's senior year in HS
Middle - Zion's freshman year at Miami
Right - Zion now

I am happy to be wrong about him and glad that he is an effective part of the rotation. Our line will still suck this year, but his development bodes well for 2021.
