I actually like this hire for them. If you are looking around at some of the HCs with experience and say "meh" he could be a good alternative. Those familiar with him know he fields some really good defenses at multiple stops including some bottom feeder type schools

Disagree. I would’ve preferred for them to hire D’Onofrio.

I'm more talking about what it's gonna do to Franklin - I've heard from people i worked with in CFB that were on that staff at Vanderbilt with them and Franklin has told them he feared the day he lost Brent Pry to a HC job. He carried him from Vandy to Penn State and to that 10 year contract. Aside from making a great hire - Penn State and Franklin could tank if that is legit.

He was a GA under Bud Foster and styles his defense after Foster's so ye, this is a good hire for them imo

I've never been impressed with BOB. His playcalling is suspect at best. Bama fans want him gone along with their OL coach. We would have been better off with BOB getting that VaTech job.

Brent Pry is a good choice for VaTech. Defensive-minded, tough and a good recruiter.

Never was impressed with Foster's scheme, seemed high school-ish to me. Like dude ran 50 front the year that they beat OSU LOL, I don't see how an Urban coached team didn't smash that ****.
 
Go over to the VT boards. Their fans are trying to hype themselves into thinking this was some genius Machiavellian hire. I’ve never seen a school with 0 national titles in any sport hold itself up in the esteem that those guys think they have.

Any hire the jury is out on until games are played. Could be good for them or bad… just gonna have to wait and see.

I will say this though it’s definitely not a “needle mover”
 
Not a splash hire but I actually think it was a decent long term hire. Always had solid defenses, seems to be the number 2 guy and leaned on heavily everywhere Franklins been, strong recruiter in general with a focus on VTs base territory. Plus he knows the school and might just stick around for the long haul.

People get too caught up in glittery names
 
Will fix one of VT's biggest issues which is a guy who can recruit the state of VA.. Should be a solid hire but will come down to who they bring in as OC
