I remember when teams would wait for a particular bowl to call them and inform them they have been selected to play in their bowl. I think it has changed now. The selection committee that picks the 4 teams for the CFP also assigns teams to individual bowl. Does anyone know if this is the way it's now done?

Yeah, but bowls used to be a reward for good teams. Now it's just a participation prize for most teams. There are 41 bowls now, and some teams will finish their bowl game with a losing record. It's pathetic.

ESPN has a big say in what happens. When these conferences took that TV money they gave up their right to make those decisions. ESPN even dictate what time the games are played.

36 of the 41 bowl games are on ESPN networks.
