What's your opinion on players skipping bowls for NFL draft prep?

Personally, I hate seeing it. I wish players would play in the games for their school and take pride in it. But, on the other hand, I completely understand their decision, especially if you're playing in the 6-6 bowl like FSU. It's a fine line to cross, but I believe the players have an obligation to themselves, teammates and coaches to play in the bowl. What do you guys think?

Include sandbagging in bowl games too.

I like it. You've giving a school three to four years up to that point. You've fulfilled your obligations.

It's a soft move to skip the bowl game. Yeah, every now and then there's a Jaylon Smith situation, but these guys can go out and get insurance for fluke injuries and play in the game. Not a fan of it at all.

Man the fact that these coaches can leave at a drop of a hat is crazy. I don't have a problem with players skipping the bowl game. Now if it were for the playoffs then thats a different story. But if its for a meaningless bowl game and your a high draft pick it would be in your best interest to skip it.

If anybody ever skips for a playoff game, then that's a problem that would need to be addressed. But, you make a good point with the coaches. I just like finishing what you started, and that includes coaches, I hate how they can just get up and leave with no repercussions

It's selfish, entitled, and shows a lack of character.

You're basically quitting on your team and on your teammates for your own selfish ends.

I don't have any respect for that. I respect guys that put their team first.

But what's your definition of meaningless?

For instance, why is Derwin James sitting out the "meaningless" bowl game but he played all of those "meaningless" games after FSU was eliminated from championship contention?

As soon as a guy is draft eligible, he should be kicked off the team. Problem solved.
Guys taking a knee for the national anthem? Don’t play it. Problem solved. WTF do they play it anyway?

I would argue that your obligation ends when the season does. Although that should go for coaches as well.

The insurance is a fraction of what they would get.

Jaylon Smith collected around $700K+ in insurance....to go with the 4 year $6.3 million contract. He was set to make $20 million plus. The insurance companies structure these very tight to their advantage.

Guys who are set to make $8-9 million.....get $2-3 million. That is big difference.

Tough to blame these kids for not risking life changing money.......wonder how many of the people on the board would do that, especially at 20-21 years old.

I'm 21 and personally I would play in a bowl game. But, I'm also assuming I would be playing for UM as a diehard and sitting here at my desk typing it instead of actually being in the situation

I'm not a fan of it. You're letting your team down, what about the guys who are not going to go pro and this may be their last hurrah to go out a winner. Those guys likely had a hand to some degree with your success, you owe them to see it through.
I'm just not a fan of any quitting whatsoever, you make a commitment you stick with it.

anyone here think someone is going to skip their bowl game if it's the national championship?

Running out our team is not a good thing but getting hurt and losing money is a stupid thing. Form the NFL side, it could hurt with some teams who value players who just love the game, but will not matter at all to teams that are all about measurables. After watching our Melvin wreck that knee, my attitude changed about leaving early. This quitting DURING your 3rd year is new so I don't know. Successful NFL players mean a lot to us because our players care and flash that U. For others, players call out their high schools.

But now he starts for the Dallas Cowboys.

I find it ridiculous when people use him as a cautionary tale.

He still missed out on that money tho

This issue will really only be relevant for a small number of guys each year. If you're a mid-round projection, then obviously you play in the game to improve your stock against solid competition. If you're a stud but your team is playing in a New Years 6 game, then you still play because you've invested so much work to get to exactly that point. If you're a 1st round talent and your 7-5 team is playing in the Flora-Bama Hooters Hot Wings Shootout against Northeast Utah State, then by all means skip the thing and begin your career.

Whats the difference between skipping a bowl game and declaring for the draft a year early?

You can't play the we're not paying the players, the education is the payment card and then get angry if they put in their two weeks notice to move onto a better paying job.

Almost every single bowl game is stupid anyhow.
