Blake James wants an Indoor Practice Facility

View as article
I dont want a stadium. Use it for 6 or 7 days a year. The maintenance alone would kill us. We cant even afford a tent and lights for our practice facility. Let the Dolphins take that burden for us. Im happy renting the field.

Yup because when you own your own stadium you can only use it for 6 or 7 days a year.

Blind leading the blind!

Yea...Track, soccer, year around practice events...I see adding a few more dates...again no place to build it

Better than the first post, still does not have to be DIRECTLY on campus.

Im sure those will really put butts in the seats and pay for the costs to maintain it. Again, its a dumb investment for us. The Dolphins cant even take care of their own stadium with a billion behind it.

FAUs stadium is a perfect template for a UM stadium. Doable at Tropocal Park.

Just to put things in perspective on the cost of an indoor facility. Here's a list of ACC schools that have indoor facilities or in the renovations phase of there facility...

1) FSU - $15 Million Dollars - 92,000 Sq ft
2) Syracuse - $17 Million Dollars - 87,000 Sq ft
3) Clemson - $10 Million Dollars - 80,000 Sq ft
4) Duke - $22 Million Dollars - 70,000 Sq ft
5) G Tech - $7 Million Dollars - 88,000 Sq ft
6) Virginia - $13 Million Dollars - 78,000 Sq ft

There's also the maintenance costs to consider.

Anybody know if the Marlin's field could be converted for football?

Yes, we need to be keeping up with the Jones's in this regards. We lose a good bit of practice time from bad weather during the late summer and fall. Now all we have to do is convince the alumni fballers to help foot the bill. AG's camps are already a tremendous recruiting tool, but imagine if we had a nice indoor facility to use for those camps. AG and company would be almost unreal on he recruiting front.

They'd have to take down some apt student housing buildings. I guess possible considering they're old and the addition of the newer student apt housing adjacent to 57th.

So most of these IPF's are more expensive than the total cost of the Schwartz Center (correct me If I'm wrong, but the Schwartz total was $13 million no?).

We ain't poor, we PO....can't afford the OR.

(Pre) Plans for indoor facility locate the building adjacent to the BUC. FYI.

In your estimation, how long would it be before actual work on an IPF would begin?

It's a matter of funding/donations and if the big boss is cool with it - which I'm sure she is - Or Mr. James wouldn't have said anything. It probably wouldnt be ready, if we started now, for a couple of years. But, it is something we have talked about doing.

That's what I dont understand stuff like this should be affordable anyway....I know UM (like most schools) has a lot of money somewhere.

I believe it cost the Dolphins $5MM back in 05/06. Can't imagine the cost going up 300%!

You forget we are not a state funded school. Every piece of equipment our hated rivals have, every piece of food they eat on campus, the 3 books they are required to read during 4 years to graduate are all paid for by taxes which Florida residents pay, including Dade County.

You would think they would have an indoor practice facility with all the rain that comes with miami. Lights should have been added to green tree. No excuses

A lot of IPF aren't just an enclosed playing field. I'm not sure about any of the ones at the schools listed above but some IPF's contain coaches offices in addition to weight, locker, training and meeting rooms. We already have those amenities at the new Schwartz Center so those extras wouldn't really be needed in a new UM IPF .

Here's an example of an IPF with all the extras

You're right, many do include amenities...like the weight room, running track, etc...if you look at the link on my original post, you can see what these IPF comes with.

It's simply not that simple.
It's the residents of Coral Gables that do not allow it. They had a sh*t fit when we installed our lights at Mark Light Stadium. They had a sh*t fit when we installed the sound system at Mark Light Stadium. You can sit here and say "no excuses" all you want but, our Facilities Design & Construction group is one of the best in the nation. Please don't act like you know better than we do.
