Miami AD Blake James: Al Golden will be evaluated after season | Canes Watch
TALLAHASSEE — UM Athletic Director Blake James maintained that he will not make any midseason decisions on coach Al Golden‘s job status.
Yes, even if Miami gets blown out at No. 12 Florida State.
“If you lose tonight, how many games do you have?” James said, in response to a direct question about what could happen to Golden if the Hurricanes looked “horrible” against the Seminoles. “If you win all the rest of your games? Again, I think you always have to evaluate at the end of the year.”
James said he received several phone calls and emails after UM’s loss at Cincinnati last Thursday.
“We have a very passionate fanbase, so any time we lose, there’s passionate feedback. There’s passionate feedback when we win,” he said. “I fully expect I’ll get emails postgame tonight, whether we win or lose. Obviously, everyone wants to win.”
Coming off the loss to Cincinnati — UM’s first regular-season non-Power 5 conference loss since Nov. 27, 2010 (when Randy Shannon lost to USF) — Golden is 3-7 in night games on the road. Two of the wins (North Carolina 2013, Virginia 2014) were against Power 5 opponents. The other came at Florida Atlantic this year.
He is 16-16 in ACC games, 0-11 vs. opponents that finished the season ranked and 4-8 vs. teams ranked at the time. Of course, he also enters Saturday 0-4 vs. Florida State, part of a five-game losing streak for the Hurricanes.
The weekly anti-Al Golden banner, flying over Doak Campbell Stadium three hours before kickoff, read: “UM ADMIN LOWERED THE BAR — WE HAVEN’T #FIREALGOLDEN ”
Asked if there was an update regarding an indoor practice facility, James said: “Not other than that it remains a priority for us.”
James said he’s pleased with the response of UM’s donors “in a period where, as you know, we haven’t had the success in football that we’ve had historically … I’m confident that that’ll open up even more doors for us and put us at a whole new level.”
