Blades named captain for Toledo

I love the way our staff has handled freshman this year and in the past. No idea why they are stubborn and stuck on Malik... makes no sense.

Someone on here said the staff wasn’t impressed by him 2 weeks after he showed up...
Blades in HS track and field could compete competently to superb in many track and field events, Versatility was great. 400m--he met the national elite standard, only ran one 100 meters (early in the year) as a senior in about 11.0 ( I am sure he could have approached the 10.8--national elite standard if he would have run the event more), high jumped 6 feet, tripled jumped well over 40 feet long jumped over 20 feet.

A few on here in the past were talking about Blades being demoted as a starter at STA, some saying he lacked excellent speed, etc. Kid is 6 feet and 190 as a true freshmen who did NOT have the EE period that many of this years DBs had. Heading in our S&C for a 200-210 pounder.

“Richt on Al Blades Jr. being a captain on special teams for the Toledo game: "Al’s come in and competed extremely well. He does a super job on every team. Coach Hartley can appreciate it when a true freshman can come in and understand the importance of that side of the game."

More Richt on Al Blades Jr.: "He has the skill set and demeanor to take care of business. We’re not afraid to honor a true freshman during the season. If he keeps it up, he may become a permanent captain by the end of the season."

Leader just like his dad

I remember certain people during his recruitment saying he was overrated
Wow. This is big. I am so impressed by this. He is going to ball out for us from now through 2020. Am sure his dad is smiling from up above!

Kid is athletic, hard hitter, and a hard worker

His ONLY 100 meters this year was done on February 24, 2018 and run into a head wind. Using the USTAFF head wind formula this was about an 11.06--100m into no wind. Remember barring injury guys improve during the course of the season. He no doubt would have been in the the 10.9s, maybe faster.

In 2017 he was 11.43 in the 100m so his speed was dropping at that distance.
In that same time he also went in one year from 5'2" to 6'-0" high jump, 400m from 50.36 to 49.5 (HS national elite)...this boy is still developing physically.

He was on the 2018 STA state championship 4 x 100 meter relay team, and the state second place 4 x 400m relay team.

1st place--- 41.57...May 4FHSAA 4A State Track & Field Championships (Elijah Moore, Brian Brewton, Alphonso Blades, Tavares Kelly)

2nd place--- 3:17.75 ...May 4 FHSAA 4A State Track & Field Championships (Jamal Cooney, Alphonso Blades, Jamir Ferguson, Tucker Conine)

A ball player first with great athletic abilities.

Always said he’s a Savage DOG! Just saw his new interview...very sharp young man too. I’ve been critical of our ST unit the last year, and last week was the best it has played, regardless of opponent. I’m sure Blades has something to do with it...hence the honor of Captain. Need to build on it🙌🙌🙌

CMR said a few weeks back that as a freshmen, you're gonna get the respect from the team starting out with special teams. Play hard there and make plays and then you'll start making youre way into the lineup at your position. Thats how it should be at Miami. Could not be more happier for Al Jr!

From Inside the U--David Lake
"Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz : “He is a special young man. The transition from high school to college usually doesn’t have a lot to do with the physical ability or the talent. It is the ones who mentally have that maturity to compete at that next level. Al stood out very early in training camp as a guy who was not in awe of the speed of the game out here.”
