Bill OBrien

I have a senior contact at PSU.....he gives Obrien very high marks for his coaching, not so much for his personality/interest in recruiting. He also follows the Canes and thinks we could do a lot worse than him, especially if he has been humbled by his Houston experience.

Us arguing over whether or not we want Bill o' brein is like a homeless man deciding whether or not he wants a mansion donated to him because the kitchen is too small. Wtf are you people talking about have you seen where are program is right now??? ...id be happy if he even takes a interview from us.
Exactly!

15-9 at Penn St.
52-48 in NFL.

Pass. Shouldn't even be considered.
Tread carefully brotha. CISers have a lot of demands concerning the background and character traits of who our next head corch should be, but a winning record is not one of them.

Posts like these are surely to raise the classic "Jimmy was 29-25 at Ok State" or the "Howard went 6-22 with the Colts."

So don't judge a head corching candidate by his record. You will not win anyone over in this crowd. Somewhere out there there's a corch with a sub-500 record who is destined to turn this program around.

GO CANES!!!

Bama fans want him gone and LSU fans don't want him. Why the **** would we?
Because fans have no idea what they’re talking about 90% of the time.

Not sure how Alabama fans attribute any of that loss to him. That game proved Alabama’s OL is not good. Worst unit there in a decade or more. They don’t have a great WR1 like they’ve had in the past decade. Worst RB1 they’ve had in over a decade. Seemingly no drop off in production offensively.

Defense on the other hand…

O'Brien would be a meh hire for me. Just because he'd be bette than Manny is not a reason to hire him. I think there are a lot of guys who would be better than Manny.

If we don't get a splashy hire (Mario, Urban or Lane), here are the guys I'd take over O'Brien:
  • Mark Stoops
  • Schiano
  • Clawson
  • Herman

The only thing I disagree with here is the RB. He was very good and didn't lose them that game in the least. In fact, they should've leaned on that RB more and if they had, they probably would've won.

No he’s good. Very good. He’s just the *worst* (least good? Idk how to phrase it because he’s good) RB they have had in a long time. He’s far from Najee Harris, Damien Harris, Derrick Henry, Yeldon, Lacy, Richardson, Ingram.. probably all the way back to 2007.

Metchie is far from Smith, Waddle, Jeudy, Ridley, Cooper, Julio Jones, etc.. but he’s also still very good.

His offense right now at Bama isn't that good, they look mid with all of the assistants and 4*/5* money can buy.

He did a good job at PSU, but he was there for 2 years. He didn't had to play the players he recruited. We don't know what kind of recruiter he is and we have no idea if he can be a program builder. He will also be looking to jump back to the NFL as soon as he can.

He fvcked himself over in Houston, was power hungry and ended up biting more than he could chew and made a mess of the franchise. The problem is, HC in college have the same level of power so I wouldn't be too happy with him having all the power again so soon

Yeah, I agree with all of that.

I’ve defended him a lot in this thread and just to clear some air… I agree with all of this. All valid concerns.

I do think he’s a good coach and is capable of running a program though. We would not be in bad shape under BOB. But how quickly does he go 9-3 or 10-2 and bolt for the NFL?

Bill O’Brien An NFL coach with a super bowl ring as well as took his team to the playoffs for 2 years, is not good enough for the miami hurricanes! Wow

1. Golden took over during sanctions. So did Butch. One of them proved he was a good coach, the other did not. OBrien (in my opinion is in the Golden group instead of the Butch group.

2. Tell me exactly why Bill O'Brien should be the head coach at Miami? He had a top QB (arguably top 2 in the NFL) and went 52-48 and 2-4 in the playoffs. He was a horrible head of operations guy and in college football, the head coach is the President of Football operations.

3. O'Brien took over a Penn st. team that had future sanctions, but the team he inherited was a top 25 team, 9-3 in the regular season (losses to #3 Alabama, #19 Nebraska, and #15 Wisconsin), and then lost the Cotton Bowl to #20 Houston. O'Brien didn't take over a BAD team. He inherited a team that finished 19th and 13th in recruiting before he got there. That's a lot of talent. And he signed a 5* QB that was considered one of the best players in HS. So, yeah, I'll pass on him.
I think there's a big difference between "the shadow" during Al's tenure, the pell grant scandal/sanctions under Butch, and rampant molestation cover ups at PSU. I still don't know how they made it through all that. We would've gotten the death penalty 5 times for that ****.

Bill O'Brien lost 9 games in 2 season with sanctions. Wasn't 96 our first full season with sanctions? We lost 9 games between 96-97. So they both lost 9 games their 1st 2 seasons with sanctions. Obviously the difference is what Butch built after that.

I'm not a huge O'Brien fan, but what he did @ PSU during that time was impressive.

That Penn State team was coming off of one of the biggest PR crisis possibly of all time. Just keeping that team together was a miracle. Not to mention the fact that he got them to play hard and recruited well despite facing a multi year bowl ban. He also won coach of the year in 2012, so there is that.

Now with the Texans, that’s a great job of skewing numbers, but he was actually 24-17 with Watson starting, and that includes the 0-4 start to 2020 that got him fired. That’s a .700 + record, and some would consider that pretty good.

He learned under Belicheck, revived a program that was moments from being placed on life support, was successful in the NFL with Houston. Now he’s learning under Saban and the dude has always rolled out good offenses.

If that’s the kind of candidate that you are passing on, then I don’t know what to tell you. Any realistic candidate has flaws, and yes O’Brien has them too. But he certainly should be a top candidate here.

This is my one concern. I think if he succeeds here then he may become a top NFL name, and I think he leaves.

Are you saying 24-17 is a .700+ win %?

College and more specifically, Miami, is a different game. The value of transitive properties doesn't work with him being a successful NFL coach and being a CFB coach. He might be good, but we need more of sure thing in our next hire and I don't think Bill is as much of a sure thing as Mark Stoops, Schiano, Mario, Lane, etc.
