Bill OBrien

We have a guy who was Temple's second choice to be head coach leading our program right now and there are people talking about they wouldn't want a coach who has a winning record in the NFL???.Heck Manny wasn't even Richts 1st choice to be DC here if you remember correctly Dave Aranda was...I need some of what you guys are smoking

He didn't draft Clowney or Watson. He wasn't the GM at the time and the belief in Houston is he wasn't all that happy with the Watson pick. Rick Smith made those picks and Bill O'Brien traded Clowney away the first chance he got. Clowney got traded just over 2 months into O'Brien's interim turned permanent GM tenure. He didn't make the pick on Reid either. Giving him credit for those picks would be like giving a GM credit for a great game plan in Week 12.
Ya I’m not familiar with when he took over as GM and all that. That’s just the draft picks when he was HC.

Oooooo tough to imagine them liking freezes background unless Mario tells them “nah I’m good” and we get desperate

He was on the quoted list, so assuming that’s out the window.

I think there's a big difference between "the shadow" during Al's tenure, the pell grant scandal/sanctions under Butch, and rampant molestation cover ups at PSU. I still don't know how they made it through all that. We would've gotten the death penalty 5 times for that ****.

Bill O'Brien lost 9 games in 2 season with sanctions. Wasn't 96 our first full season with sanctions? We lost 9 games between 96-97. So they both lost 9 games their 1st 2 seasons with sanctions. Obviously the difference is what Butch built after that.

I'm not a huge O'Brien fan, but what he did @ PSU during that time was impressive.

butch assembled an amazing group of college football players. a once in a generation haul. no doubt about that.

but as pure football coaches? O'Brien is the better guy. there's a reason butch was out of work forever, (and no, I don't include getting hired as a payback by Pete Garcia an actual job).

o'brien will be on multiple short lists for jobs in January. both college and NFL

Name to watch. Guy can coach an offense. They have 5 stars all over but his offense stretches the field and he uses all his weapons. Also brings HC experience from college and NFL. Would be in my top 4.
NFL..just a pit stop at bamas Coordinator rehab Program

1. Golden took over during sanctions. So did Butch. One of them proved he was a good coach, the other did not. OBrien (in my opinion is in the Golden group instead of the Butch group.

2. Tell me exactly why Bill O'Brien should be the head coach at Miami? He had a top QB (arguably top 2 in the NFL) and went 52-48 and 2-4 in the playoffs. He was a horrible head of operations guy and in college football, the head coach is the President of Football operations.

3. O'Brien took over a Penn st. team that had future sanctions, but the team he inherited was a top 25 team, 9-3 in the regular season (losses to #3 Alabama, #19 Nebraska, and #15 Wisconsin), and then lost the Cotton Bowl to #20 Houston. O'Brien didn't take over a BAD team. He inherited a team that finished 19th and 13th in recruiting before he got there. That's a lot of talent. And he signed a 5* QB that was considered one of the best players in HS. So, yeah, I'll pass on him.
Golden took over during what Sanctions??...A Cloud of 8 lost schollies??....Lol...

Nah Man...Butch couldn't take a HC job as part of his UNC Buyout for 5yrs...Hence him being a consultant to Tampa Bay and a TV announcer...And Lol at O'Brien being a better coach....Butch walks around with 2 SB Rings and a NC Ring largely because of his Defensive prowness...What's O'Brien walk around with??....Go watch UMs DLs from 84-88 and the Cowboys DLs/Defense in the early to mid 90s then tell me about Great coaching....

Two NASTY units.

Gentlemen, I mean porsters, O'Brien is a great coach and awful GM/recruiter. Bama is perfect for him, or an NFL HC job. L$U might also work because they are the state school with lot$ of resource$. He is not my number one pick by far, but he is a much better pick than most of the folks mentioned.

3 SB rings, 2 as DL coach (JJ’s back-to-back) and was Switzer‘s DC for ‘that’ SB? Or am I wrong?

Edit: Never mind….Switzer’s SB was Butch‘s first year as HC. 1995.

I don’t ‘want’ him myself. I don’t think he’s a great fit but I know for a fact he’s a good coach. We would be much better off than we are now. But.. as many have said for a long time and as Highsmith, Bratton, and Lamar Thomas said on the YouTube thing the other day.. it takes a specific type of person to coach here and workout. He’d certainly be in my top 5 or so and I would not complain about the hire.

My comment was judging him by his NFL record (NFL winning record over that many years with 4 division titles and 4 playoff appearances - don’t care who his QB was) and then saying he’s not qualified to coach the university of Miami because of that record is moronic. Rip him for his roster management and GM job with the Texans all you want. Fair game. But you’ll be on here clamoring for Mario who has a career losing record, Kiffin who went 5-15 in the NFL and got fired from USC, and Mark Stoops who is about .500 (and I’m not against any of them FTR).

Bill O’Brien at Miami is probably not great. But at somewhere like Penn State or Mississippi State he’d be a very solid hire.
he didnt drop that one pass late in game and he didnt give up 40 something points.

He also didn’t hand the ball off to his 215 lb RB ONCE when he had first and goal from the 3 down by 4 in the 4th quarter.

This Bill O’Brien stuff is nonsense. He was wearing out his welcome at Penn State when the Texans came calling and he destroyed an organization when he got total control. He’s bad at clock management. Doesn’t know when to use timeouts. Never admits mistakes and will flat out lie to your face when you call him on it. Throw in his rabbit ears and he’d be a perfect choice for a program in a major city who is starving for a return to greatness and fans with very little patience.

No...Butch was a DL Coach for 1st SB...and then DC for 2nd when Wannstedt went to the Bears...
hes no

hes not a fit here anyway. hes not going into so fla and killing recruiting.

He might have been the worst GM in league history, and he is also overrated as a HC. He beat up on crappy Jags, Titans and Colts back in the day but he was a horrific clock manager, decision-maker and play-caller. He was also an a-hole, internal back-stabber. Otherwise, he looks good to go…
