Bill OBrien

1. Golden took over during sanctions. So did Butch. One of them proved he was a good coach, the other did not. OBrien (in my opinion is in the Golden group instead of the Butch group.

2. Tell me exactly why Bill O'Brien should be the head coach at Miami? He had a top QB (arguably top 2 in the NFL) and went 52-48 and 2-4 in the playoffs. He was a horrible head of operations guy and in college football, the head coach is the President of Football operations.

3. O'Brien took over a Penn st. team that had future sanctions, but the team he inherited was a top 25 team, 9-3 in the regular season (losses to #3 Alabama, #19 Nebraska, and #15 Wisconsin), and then lost the Cotton Bowl to #20 Houston. O'Brien didn't take over a BAD team. He inherited a team that finished 19th and 13th in recruiting before he got there. That's a lot of talent. And he signed a 5* QB that was considered one of the best players in HS. So, yeah, I'll pass on him.
LoL, O'Brien inherited a 2012 squad that had 15 scholarship players transfer out before the season started. He started a walk-on at quarterback. There is a reason why he was Big Ten coach of the year. 8-4 and 6-2 with that roster was quite a feet. You want to criticize his roster management at the end with the Texans that is fair game.

I don’t ‘want’ him myself. I don’t think he’s a great fit but I know for a fact he’s a good coach. We would be much better off than we are now. But.. as many have said for a long time and as Highsmith, Bratton, and Lamar Thomas said on the YouTube thing the other day.. it takes a specific type of person to coach here and workout. He’d certainly be in my top 5 or so and I would not complain about the hire.

My comment was judging him by his NFL record (NFL winning record over that many years with 4 division titles and 4 playoff appearances - don’t care who his QB was) and then saying he’s not qualified to coach the university of Miami because of that record is moronic. Rip him for his roster management and GM job with the Texans all you want. Fair game. But you’ll be on here clamoring for Mario who has a career losing record, Kiffin who went 5-15 in the NFL and got fired from USC, and Mark Stoops who is about .500 (and I’m not against any of them FTR).

Bill O’Brien at Miami is probably not great. But at somewhere like Penn State or Mississippi State he’d be a very solid hire.

No, I don’t prefer him because of his track record as a coach. If you can’t win with Watson as your QB and you are the OC and GM as well as the HC that’s a red flag IMO. I don’t think he can identify talent or run a football team. His track record in those two areas isn’t good.

He made the playoffs 4 times and lost to the Chiefs twice and the Patriots. Andy Reid and Bill Belicheck. Pat Mahomes and Tom Brady. That’s the highest level you can ever coach against on that stage. Tell me again what more he should have done with Deshaun Watson?

Im not gonna comment on him being able to identify talent or not I haven’t seen his drafts and all of that. He wasn’t a great GM..trading away Hopkins and that whole scenario. He never should have been given those reigns to start with. I know he drafted Watson and drafted Clowney. Can’t fault him for either of those. He also found a steal in a later round (2nd or 3rd I think) in Justin Reid - one of the better FS in football. As far as later rounds I have no idea.

Matt McGloin was the starting QB for Penn St. in 2010, 2011 (two-qb w/ Bolden), and 2012 (first year with O'Brien). Was McGloin a walk on? Yes, in 2008. But him being a walk-on and using it in support of O'Brien isn't fair and a bit disingenuous. When O'Brien took over, McGloin was a two year starter as the QB of Penn st.

Bolden, a 4* recruit for Paterno, was passed by McGloin after Bolden suffered a head injury. He originally requested to transfer from Penn St. even before the Sandusky penalties, but Paterno didn't permit him to transfer. But once the NCAA allowed any student to transfer immediately, Bolden finally left the program. O'Brien inherited McGloin who wasn't a scrub. He was Penn St.'s starting QB for two years.

Of the 15 transfers, only Justin Brown (WR) transferred and made an impact at his next school. No one else did. The K/P that transferred wrestled with transferring like Bolden BEFORE the Sandusky penalties. His mother was sick in Texas. He only attempted four kicks for Mack Brown the following year when he transferred. Although the NCAA allowed Penn St. players to transfer anyplace they wanted to without having to sit out a year, and also allowing teams to count the transfers against the 2013 scholarships, these transfers went to Robert Morris, Rutgers, Marshall, and etc. i.e., they weren't very good. So, miss me on "O'Brien lost 15 players" as if they would play any factor in the success of the season.

15-9 at Penn St.
52-48 in NFL.

Pass. Shouldn't even be considered.
Sooo having a WINNING record in the NFL, is a reason to pass? THE NFL?! Wow…

Fair enough, I forgot McCloin was a returning starter.

My friend, my point is, the HC IS like an NFL GM. IMO, if O'Brien was bad at being GM, I think that translates to HC in college football.

And we need to clarify some things with Watson as his QB.

Watson and O'Brien were together in Houston from 2017-2020 (first 4 games of 2020).

2017: 4-12
2018: 11-5 lost to Colts in 1st round of playoffs.
2019: 10-6 lost to Chiefs in 2nd round of playoffs
2020: 0-4; O'Brien fired. Watson has a great season, but because of the talent O'Brien acquired around him, the team goes 4-12.

And remember, Texans played in very winnable division every season especially after Luck retired from the Colts. Again, my biggest complaint about O'Brien is identifying talent, getting it, coaching the talent, and producing results. Also, running a program is a major concern for me.

Barely .500 with one of the great QBs in the league? In the NFL if you have a generational talent at QB...YOU BETTER WIN. Brady, Mahomes, Watson, Wilson, Rodgers.... the NFL is QB heavy. If you have a great QB, you need to win....not barely .500. And plus, the AFC South wasn't very good when O'Brien and Watson were there. After Luck retired, the division belonged to Watson and the Texans. Easy path to the playoffs.

And that's all I'm going to say about Bill O'Brien. I don't think he will do well here, but it won't matter. Kentucky should go 5-1 (loss to UGA) the rest of the way, a New Year Six Bowl, and Miami will go after Stoops, the former assistant coach here. So, enough about O'Brien.

Name to watch. Guy can coach an offense. They have 5 stars all over but his offense stretches the field and he uses all his weapons. Also brings HC experience from college and NFL. Would be in my top 4.
Would be choice 1 for me with clawson a very close 2nd
mario 3rd

He didn't draft Clowney or Watson. He wasn't the GM at the time and the belief in Houston is he wasn't all that happy with the Watson pick. Rick Smith made those picks and Bill O'Brien traded Clowney away the first chance he got. Clowney got traded just over 2 months into O'Brien's interim turned permanent GM tenure. He didn't make the pick on Reid either. Giving him credit for those picks would be like giving a GM credit for a great game plan in Week 12.
