We sure didn't have a problem previously!
It may be a failing memory - but I recall Schnellenberger taking the UM team on the road. We played all over the nation - and by being exposed to many different defenses and many different offenses - we learned a lot - got really flexible - really experienced in meeting whatever came along.
And it took a few years - but I'll never forget the night we played the mighty Nebraska that had run up all kinds of numbers against everyone they played against - just overpowering everyone.
Until us. (Everyone said we didn't have a dog's chance.)
Not saying we should go Independent. But we'd be a very popular team to schedule. IF - we're winning. IF - we're a good football team.
We'd pack stadiums. We'd be impossible to ignore.
So? We dominate a lesser Conference - and show up for the playoffs with great regularity. The more different teams we compete against - the better able to advance though the playoffs - as they play with different emphasis and mindsets.
Fun to think about . . . Renegades once again! And recruits have a desire to be football renegades!
It's not the 80s anymore
Just take a look at UF's schedule from 1983:
--Miami
--USC West
--Indiana State
--Miss State
--LSU
--Vandy
--East Carolina
--Auburn
--Georgia
--Kentucky
--FSU
That's 6 SEC games and 5 OOC games, which was standard for the SEC back in those days.
Now they have 9 conference games and 3 OOC games, 1 of which will always be FSU--which leaves 2 OOC games that will usually be cupcakes.
Not saying we have to schedule UF, just pointing out that times have changed significantly. All leagues are playing far more conference games and far fewer OOC games, which means it'd be pretty much impossible to make a decent schedule year-in year-out as an independent.
