Big 12 pac 12 alliance or merger?

We sure didn't have a problem previously!

It may be a failing memory - but I recall Schnellenberger taking the UM team on the road. We played all over the nation - and by being exposed to many different defenses and many different offenses - we learned a lot - got really flexible - really experienced in meeting whatever came along.

And it took a few years - but I'll never forget the night we played the mighty Nebraska that had run up all kinds of numbers against everyone they played against - just overpowering everyone.

Until us. (Everyone said we didn't have a dog's chance.)

Not saying we should go Independent. But we'd be a very popular team to schedule. IF - we're winning. IF - we're a good football team.

We'd pack stadiums. We'd be impossible to ignore.

So? We dominate a lesser Conference - and show up for the playoffs with great regularity. The more different teams we compete against - the better able to advance though the playoffs - as they play with different emphasis and mindsets.

Fun to think about . . . Renegades once again! And recruits have a desire to be football renegades!

It's not the 80s anymore

Just take a look at UF's schedule from 1983:

--Miami
--USC West
--Indiana State
--Miss State
--LSU
--Vandy
--East Carolina
--Auburn
--Georgia
--Kentucky
--FSU

That's 6 SEC games and 5 OOC games, which was standard for the SEC back in those days.

Now they have 9 conference games and 3 OOC games, 1 of which will always be FSU--which leaves 2 OOC games that will usually be cupcakes.

Not saying we have to schedule UF, just pointing out that times have changed significantly. All leagues are playing far more conference games and far fewer OOC games, which means it'd be pretty much impossible to make a decent schedule year-in year-out as an independent.

Agreed and we are not going to get a financially beneficial contract through media or new media with way the u has played last 15 + years

I think the expanded playoffs alleviate some of the concerns with independence. You could also have a group of quasi independent schools that go in with netflix or Amazon. Football is king. Amazon is paying 1 Billion a year just to show Thurs night games. I think Amazon would pay a lot for exclusive rights to show games for

Miami
BYU
Army*
Navy*
Air Force* (service academies have a national audience)
Liberty
USC
TCU
Baylor

You would have LA, Miami, and Texas markets.

Amazon could also try to work something out with Notre Dame, which wants to stay independent. Everyone thinks NDs NBC deal is some bajillion dollar megadeal that fills up NDs bank account. It's actually only 15 million per year. Between its NBC deal and ACC pro rata share, ND actually makes 7 million dollars LESS than a full member of the acc.
The expanded SEC will likely occupy the expanded playoff. In which case, good luck when you are independant and your SOS is kaka and no conference championship to show for it.

Hypothetically, if we had jumped to the sec instead of the acc at the time, how are we looking as a program?

Fair enough.

I just changed my opinion on joining a conference when I learned that the B1G has a 10 billion pot of academic research grants (which doubles in amount about every 10 years) only available to B1G members through the Big10 Academic Alliance. That's tilted me heavily in favor of the B1G.

Sorry if that was posted elsewhere in the thread. My ADD doesn't always allow for thorough reading.

Conferences are bigger than before. Scheduling OOC games isn’t as easy as it uses to be. Now with the playoffs potentially expanding, it will make teams even more selective or less selective on who they play OOC. If you are in a super conference, you will need to go through a gauntlet and the playoffs to win it all. Now reason to schedule an ND or Miami.

BS.

Notre Dame and Miami were independents - they're a big name in college football - and as long as they're winning - they'll be in demand.

It will be difficult to schedule good OOC games for us. Almost guaranteed nobody worthwhile in the new SEC would schedule us as they would want to schedule only cupcakes. Their road to the playoffs would be hard enough. If another super conference is formed and we are not in it, expect the same thing.

I don't know why everybody want to jump conferences, just to be mid to bottom tear in it...
