Bewilderment

Many posters are leaving this site due to their disappointment with the team. I’m so disappointed, that I finally decided to create an account so that I could vent.

The one word I have to describe my emotions this season is bewilderment. After the egregious decision to hire Manny Diaz in a coaching search lasting less than 24 hours, the school finally decided to make an unprecedented investment in its football coach. Moreover, that coach went ahead and hired the most expensive staff in our university’s history. No reasonable person expected championship results in Mario’s first season, but right now we look worse than we ever did in the past decade of mediocre football. I would typically expect for significant changes to be made after such a demoralizing loss, but we already had a season defining loss against MTSU! This makes our current position all the more precarious.

The problem lies primarily with our coaching staff. Did we recruit the worst four- and five-star players in the country, a statistically improbable scenario? I don’t think so, in spite of the constant harangues on this site about player quality. It’s evident that Gattis’ system isn’t working here. For an excellent example of the importance of scheme, look no further than our next opponent. Virginia’s QB was playing very well last season, but this year he looks pedestrian under his new coach. Ironically, I expect him to carve up our defense next week. As bad as our offense has been this season, the defense is not playing much better. I don’t understand how a veteran coach like Steele allows such frequent defensive breakdowns. This abomination of a season is a team effort.

As the head coach, Mario is ultimately responsible for this disaster; he hired Gattis and Steele after a laborious coaching search. I don’t think he suddenly forgot how to lead a program after his stint at Oregon, so I have to believe that Mario knows that things need to be dramatically overhauled. However, I’m worried that he is too stubborn to adjust his philosophy. I’m also worried about his ability to keep recruiting at a high level with these results. He already came to Miami with a slight reputation as a “QB killer” due to his alleged mismanagement of Justin Herbert. TVD’s regression this year has only exacerbated this reputation.

This is extremely frustrating. We have too much talent and too many resources invested in this program to be playing like this. For his sake and ours, I hope Mario figures out a solution soon.

All good points. I will say DVD was lighting it up last few games. So that doesn’t really hold water.

I feel like our fans always view a 7 win season as a rebuild when in reality it is Miami’s average.

I'm just laughing at this point. I can't believe you bothered to type this thread.

We all feel your pain sir. I think a huge piece of the puzzle here will be Radakovich. Is he strong enough to force mario to make changes? His leadership will be tested early in his miami tenure.
