Best Safety in NFL

Lott was a bad boy, but Reed was probably the one QBs feared the most. Did anyone flip games more than him? As a Cane, I pick Ed hands down. For the old timers, let me throw out a name: Jake Scott. Guy was a true phenom on the No Name defense that held the scoring record for decades until Ed's Ravens broke it. Never included in list of all time greats but dude was, and is, as crazy as any. That old defense was so good that nobody got star status but if you watched Jake play, the boy made a difference in just about every game. It was a different game, but he is the old timer I think of as being like Ed Reed.
 
To this day I think God called sean taylor home because.. that man was gonna kill somebody the way he hit

I would take him over anybody
 
The top 4 to me are Ed Reed, Ronnie Lott, Troy polomalu, Sean Taylor


Top 3 now would be IMO
Tyrann Matthieu
Kam chancellor
Earl Thomas
 
One day we're going to get a kid that reminds us of Sean T…..I'm not saying he's going to be as great, because Sean T is one of the greatest pure football players I've ever seen period, but like somebody said earlier we produced the two greatest safeties of all time, why can't we produce more

I like the kid from Southridge, #1 , can't think of his name right now, but that young man is going to be a beast in this D

It is absolutely Ed Reed. No talking, no discussion. Long career. Pro bowler, Super Bowl champ, super well respected around the league as the best. Had the picks, the TDs, the PRs. I honestly think he should be in the conversation as the greatest defender in the history of the game.

Sean T = Bo Jackson of safeties....my guy, I truly like this analogy and comparison.

As much as I hate the Cowboys, Darren Woodson would have to go in the most underrated category for greatest safeties. I don't understand how he's not in the HOF. He manned that safety position like a boss. If memory serves correctly, I think he's the all time leader in tackles in Cowboys history and that's saying a lot for a historic franchise. Yeah he was definitely a good one, for sure.

Other than the Super Bowls, DPOY, All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections, you're right, can't win with him and can't see why he would make the list of top safeties. Unless you just started watching football in 2014, in which case I welcome you to the sport.

Other than the Super Bowls, DPOY, All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections, you're right, can't win with him and can't see why he would make the list of top safeties. Unless you just started watching football in 2014, in which case I welcome you to the sport.

Ed made opposing offenses focus on him more than any other safety in history.

Someone said it seemed like he knew what was coming and he often did. Best safety to ever lace them up with regards to seeing the plays before the ball was even snapped.

Opposing QB's have also said before every snap, they would scan the field specifically to see where he was. Nobody put more pressure on the QB's than him.

Lott, pure violence. Guy was brutal back there and if you went in the middle with him there, you had balls. Lott, I'm not even sure he could've played in today's game....at the least he would've accumulated a ton of fines and suspensions.

Ed had it all, did it all, and was the best defender on the best defense (for multiple seasons) that also had at least one other hall of famer, maybe more. This might sound sacrilege, but Ed wipes his *** with everyone else. I think Sean may have surpassed him. I believe Sean was a better athlete than Ed. Unfortunately bc of some god damned **** face not only will we never know, but way worse, a young man was murdered for what?
