Best case/Worst case Season Outlook -- Offense

Y'all need to stop. This unit didn't boom or bust last year. It didn't bust. It only boomed. Metro Boomin. Boom Boom Room. Hiroshima and Nagasaki booms.

We had ONE game all season where we averaged below 6.69 yards per play. One. And it was FSU, a game we literally controlled from pregame warmups. That's all. Other than that, in the other 11 games (and the bowl game, although I don't count exhibitions), we averaged at least 6.69 a play.

6.69 a play would have ranked 6th in the country for the entire season.

So, for every single game except the FSU game, THE WORST PERFORMANCE would have been 6th best in America.

We punted 25 times the entire season. Twenty-five punts. In 13 football games. Army, who runs the ball every play, had 25 punts. The next closest team to us had 32 punts. The gators punted 59 times.

This was the best offense in America, by a considerable margin. It was all boom, all the time. This offense this year isn't set-up to be more stable, because you can't be more stable than every time I touch the football I stuff a touchdown up your brown eye.

I’m not worried about our QB, OL RBs or receivers overall. I do ask myself who will replace X and Arroyo to convert first downs. They were money almost all the time. Can Lofton and Toney be those guys?

We held the ball for 32:30 a game, averaged 100 more yards per game than the 15th best offense and scored 36 points in every game but one, but I feel like this year's team is set up to do even better, with less effort. I heard Dawson say we might play 9 or 10 guys on some snaps to keep everyone fresh, and if we punt, he's going to douse a random member of the offense in gasoline and shoot them with a flaming arrow.

We scored 73 touchdowns LMAO.

Punts - 25
Turnovers - 16
Stopped on downs - 7

So we had 48 drives end by giving the ball to the other team without attempting a scoring play.
We had 73 drives end by sticking the ball into the opposing endzone.

Be better, Shannon.
Just to be clear, because sarcasm can be hard to detect. You and I agree. I was mocking a specific individual with my poRst.

I feel like people didn’t watch our games last year. Between people calling our offense “boom or bust” and the people calling for us to control the clock more it just seems like some folks weren’t paying attention at all. “Boom or bust” insinuates that we were either really good or really bad. Our offense was never really bad. Except maybe the second half of the bowl game with Emory Williams throwing the ball into the dirt. There was no “bust”.

We were also 14th nationally in time of possession despite throwing the ball on more than half our plays. The Georgia Tech game kept us out of the top ten. Are we just supposed to run the play clock all the way down to one on every play?

I was referring to the play to play, drive to drive. Not game to game.

Think it will be a lot more consistent 7YPP, wheres it’s less chunk plays. Where last year we had times where we’d go 3 or 4 plays and net 7/8 yards then pop off for 50 yard gain.

Higher floor (more push from OL) more dominant running game.

Lower ceiling (less chunk plays of 20+).

A box score can show two drives both being 8 plays, 65 yards. But there’s lots of different ways to get there. That was more my logic

Why does everyone keep saying this?

Was Damien Martinez trash and we have someone better?

People keep saying this like it's a guarantee. I am not convinced. We may have more rushing yards per game because of more attempts but we were 6th in yds per rush last year. It's a stretch to think we will just automatically beat that just because.

Damien masked some major flaws on the interior of our OL. His 4.4 yards after contact was #2 in the entire country (only behind Jeanty). So while canes were 6th in yards per rush, lots of that came down to Damien making multiple people miss. Doesn’t tell the whole story.

All reports are this is the best OL we’ve had under Rio yet.

Totally agree. The scheme is designed to boom, I mean Miami had the #25 offense with TVD and Henry Parrish as the leading RB 😂. The way this staff recruits, as long as Dawson is here this will be a top 10 offense.

I love Lyle’s potential as well, but last season we were the best short yardage running team I have seen at UM since 2002 with McGahee who was unstoppable inside the 5 yard line. Short yardage running is often disrespected or ignored because everyone loves the home run threat. But short yardage occurs many, many times a game and keeps drives moving. The home run happens once a game if we are lucky,

Don't get crazy.

He just called his 17th straight half back dive into a loaded box to "set up the D".

To understand Miami’s running game, you have to understand the basic principals that Mario demands in his offenses. Miami doesn’t run the ball with the expectation of breaking long runs and big plays. They run the ball with the main priority being gaining positive yardage every time. I’m not saying they don’t want big plays. I’m saying they will sacrifice certain aspects of the running game if it means they have a reasonable chance of losing yardage. There’s a reason why we don’t run a ton of counter plays or tosses. ****, we never run end around plays either. Those type of plays tend to be the most boom or bust (irony) and Mario (and Dawson) prioritize staying ahead of the chains. We run a ton of inside stuff with tight splits because we know it’s usually going to gain positive yards. Even if it’s only two or three. It’s also the reason why we are so good in short yardage. Miami has been near the top of the list of teams with the least negative offensive plays the last two years. They’re also near the top of the list in average yards gained before contact. Which is very impressive considering they tend to play running backs who look for contact.

My point is, if you put talent in his system it just works. That Houston QB in 2022 and TVD weee both at best mid and both of those offenses were ranked 25, Those offenses had mid running games as well. The moment he gets a NFL caliber QB, and a good running game BOOM, the system produces the #1 offense in the nation by a mile.

When you pair stud Jimmy’s and Joe’s with great X’s and O’s you get top 10 offense consistently.

This season we will all find out if the success was all Cam or the system.

We led the country in yards gained in the A gap last year. It's not by accident.

3rd and 4 is considerably easier than 3rd and 9.

How many of that was yards before contact? Was trying to find it, but couldn’t

Would love the advance analytics on that

Like everyone, I can get frustrated with what looks like a one dimensional run game but that’s how our coach wants our offense to run. We avoid negative plays, usually have third and short situations and are very successful in short yardage. It all adds up to an offense that can consistently move the ball and get first downs. I
