Kosar, awaiting liver transplant, has 'two aggressive procedures'

Cleveland Browns great Bernie Kosar said Wednesday morning that he underwent "two aggressive procedures" to stop internal bleeding as he awaits a liver transplant that has been delayed.

In a video posted to X, the former quarterback said that he was set to get a liver transplant this past weekend, but it was held off because the donor organ was infected. Kosar then underwent the two procedures and was set for a third procedure, he said.

"I could really use your love, support and actual prayers today," said Kosar, speaking from a hospital bed.

In July 2024, Kosar, announced in a story in Cleveland Magazine that he had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's disease.

In terms of QBs of UM Championship Teams, none better, IMO, than Bernie. Best wishes to him in this difficult time.

I was really glad to see him get sober somewhat recently. It's sad to see the liver damage caught up with him.

Also- does this now make for a mini Parkinson's cluster in that 1982 QB room? Sad situation.
Who else has Parkinson's from that room?

'Looking back now, who knows if some of the symptoms from years ago that were attributed back then to alcohol might've been early manifestations of Parkinson's? As you say, a sad situation indeed.

Thanks. I was aware but didn't recall him in that 1982 room. That was a talented room to say the least -- Kelly, Richt, Vandewende, Kosar, and Testaverde.

I went to the Maryland-Miami game that Fall at College Park. Boomer Esiason, and his backups Frank Reich and Stan Gelbaugh, were QBs for the Terps and all played in the NFL.

Third stringer Kyle Vandewende from Palm Beach Gardens had to play for us, and he played well. We lost on a last minute FG, 18-17.

Alcohol is a *****. My great aunt died from cirrhosis of the liver. Before she died I asked her if she would change anything in her life and she said she enjoyed every minute of it. For three years and 25 trips in an ambulance I knew all the ER doctors at Kendall Regional, South Miami and Baptist Hospital. Not a fun way do end a life.

My dad went the same way. Cirrhosis. Liver just eventually shut down. Had to be regularly drained of fluid it could no longer process. Once he got to the end stage, he went fast.
