Not defending Bill here, but I don’t know how much of a say he had picking Daniel Graham as their 1st round pick. NE Had 6 total picks in the 2002 draft and 5 of them were offensive players. Deion Branch was the only player in that draft class that made a contribution. Bill is and always has been a defensive guy. Makes me wonder how much input he had then. I’m sure as the seasons went on, he had more of an influence on their draft pics. Maybe one of many reasons him and Robert Kraft weren’t on the best of terms.Very cool thanks for sharing.. The only odd thing is that Bill passed on Ed reed in the draft. He chose TE Daniel Graham 3 picks before.
Should hear Gregg Williams talk about Sean T......its even more slurpping
He wasn’t the GM at that time I don’t think. And if he was then that’s huge miss by himVery cool thanks for sharing.. The only odd thing is that Bill passed on Ed reed in the draft. He chose TE Daniel Graham 3 picks before.
Correct!Giving GOAT level players their just due is not slurping. They earned the right to receive the praise & recognition directed at them because they put in the work to become legendary.
They serve as exemplary figures for the current generation of players to aspire to, not just in terms of their performance but also when it comes to their approach & mentality towards the game.
Bill Belichick had influence and decision making on any draft pick that the Patriots have ever made. The sole reason why he was the HC of the Patriots was he was allowed to do the stuff that Parcells was not allowed to do. Kraft felt like Belichicks knowledge over the salary cap and roster construction gave them an advantage. Not defending Bill here, but I don’t know how much of a say he had picking Daniel Graham as their 1st round pick. For sure, that 2001 Patriots team was great on the defensive side. I think even most casual football fans realize the defense was the reason they won the Super Bowl that year and not Tom Brady. That’s when the media really started glazing Brady.Bill Belichick had influence and decision making on any draft pick that the Patriots have ever made. The defensive side was completely dominant and didn't need any picks, if any. They were the reason why the team won the Super Bowl in the first place. But I'll give you a hint why he wasn't drafted:
Grahams coach at Colorado was Gary Barnett. His son worked with the Patriots, so there was a personal relationship. Bill always did these things, trusting personal relationships over outside information, which is what led to him ultimately deconstructing a roster to its bare bones.
We had our national scout leave post the 2019 draft, because Belichick had personal relationships with ASU coaches to draft N'Keal Harry over Deebo Samuel and AJ Brown. I heard that these two allegedly didn't take their visit seriously, but I call BS. Belichick draft Gronkowski a decade prior, and he slept on a table during his Top 30 visit.
HC Belichick makes you love football, GM Belichick makes you question why you started watching the sport.
I originally thought the same thing as well, but according to different articles, he became the de facto GM when he accepted the HC position. So yeah, huge miss by him.He wasn’t the GM at that time I don’t think. And if he was then that’s huge miss by him
So let me get this straight…Very cool thanks for sharing.. The only odd thing is that Bill passed on Ed reed in the draft. He chose TE Daniel Graham 3 picks before.
With all due respect, David Givens was not a miss. A clutch big game performer who exceeded his draft status. Outside of that, sure.7th round pick # 253 - MISS David Givens, WR, Norte Dame.
I'll put it this way, he can evaluate the D-Line extremely well and manages to find good DB talent at times. He drafted Seymour, Green, Wilfork and Warren and that D-Line basically made him stop drafting D-Line for a long time until these players retired. Then he reloaded with Chandler Jones, Dont'a Hightower and Trey Flowers. So let me get this straight…
The greatest defensive head coach in history, had a player on his team. Tell him that the far away best player on one of the best teams in college football history that was clear even at the time with Ed Reed, and he passed over him for a tight end despite that inside information and watching game tape and I’m supposed to worry about his talent evaluation in North Carolina and college 20 years later.?
Good luck![]()
You know who was even more egregious in passing on Ed? Ol’ Jerry Jones. Dude picked Roy Williams at #8 instead of the greatest safety ever. 19 year old RattlerCane was flummoxed by that decision. Jerry also passed on Dwight Freeney in that same draft.
Didnt the pats have a good safety duo? Years kinda run together but was that the Lawyer Milloy/Ty Law era? I mean that could have played a part as well, you usually draft to try to fill holes and build depth, maybe felt S just was not a need compared to the rest of the roster. For sure, that 2001 Patriots team was great on the defensive side. If Bill had control over their draft picks, he did a horrible job in that 2002 class. While they needed help offensively, he whiffed badly on all but one of his picks on that side of the ball. He’s also lying thru his thru his teeth if he acts like he wanted to draft Reed and didn’t have a chance.
1st round pick # 21- MISS Daniel Graham, TE, Colorado.
2nd round pick # 65 - HIT Deion Branch, WR, Louisville.
4th round pick # 117 - MISS Rohan Davey, QB, LSU
4th round pick # 126 - HIT Jarvis Green, DE, LSU
7th round pick # 237 - MISS Antoine Womack, RB, Virginia
7th round pick # 253 - MISS David Givens, WR, Norte Dame.
He did get better in following draft classes. Hit on a lot of good offensive lineman and defensive players. That’s why I was questioning how much influence he had over his draft choices early in his coaching career with the Pats.
They did have Milloy and Law on that team. We can use hindsight in 2025 and call it dumb. This argument would make a lot more sense if he chose another S instead. So let me get this straight…
