The Florida Gators held their first scrimmage of the fall on Monday night and the young guys got to showcase what they can do more than the veterans.
Feleipe Franks wasn’t as sharp as he has been this fall and was outshined on the night by Kyle Trask. I was told he was still ok, but has been better. He did give up a Pick-6 to junior safety Shawn Davis. I was told by my source that it was like the only big play from Davis on the night.
I wish I had more on Trask, but would assume that he was responsible for his fair share of the following receiver highlights.
Freshman receiver Trent Whittemore had two touchdowns on the evening and ‘Mossed’ Kaiir Elam for one of them. He may have had the best night overall.
Redshirt sophomore tight end Kemore Gamble had a 50+ yard touchdown reception.
Redshirt junior receiver Rick Wells also had a very good night catching everything that was thrown to him, but I was not able to gather whether he scored or not.
Junior receiver Kadarius Toney had one play where he juked everyone out of their shoes. That was followed shortly after by a 5-juke, nice catch and run by redshirt freshman Jacob Copeland. Copeland didn’t see much time, even though the younger guys got a ton of work.
One older guy that did well also was redshirt senior Van Jefferson, although again I didn’t get whether he scored.
My source has been particularly not overly pleased with the offensive line, but said the first string offensive line had a pretty good day and it surprised him. The rest are still having trouble.
The first three running backs didn’t get on the field much in the scrimmage, but freshman Nay’Quan Wright had a 60-yard touchdown run. He hasn’t had a great camp as he is behind all of the others while learning the system, but that was a good sign from the young man.
On the defensive side, evidently freshman linebacker Tyron Hopper has been impressive and he showed off two big hits in the scrimmage that “everyone could hear and feel”.
I mentioned Elam earlier, and Whittemore did burn him on the one touchdown catch, but otherwise he had a very strong night.
That’s pretty much what I've got so far but I am endeavoring to get more. Dan Mullen should discuss the scrimmage starting at 11 am on Tuesday.
