This used to be a staple of Shadow’s board:

GREEN light:

1. OL. Biggest takeaway from a preseason game. OL moved people like they were supposed to. Pass Protection was pretty good last year, but I saw some real promise road grading.

2. QBs. Jake Garcia looked very good. TVD, minus the fumble, played about as well as you can. His one weak point, of all things, is his check down throws. He doesn’t always lead his receiver

3. Special Teams. Anyone who watched knows what I’m talking about. Blocking scheme was much better

4. RBs. Very good. Had big holes to run through and did exactly what you would expect. Still waiting on a game breaker here.

YELLOW light:

1. Secondary — slept walk a little bit. Frierson and Kam looked live. Ivey is… Ivey.

2. WRs — Generally good, but I was at the game and the WRs not named Restrepo and Smith were not separating like they should have.

3. LBs — I played LB and focus on them. Whole lotta decent, not much very good.

RED light:

1. Ivey. Kevin Steele knows what good corners look like… woof

Did Smith even catch a pass? BCU WR look more explosive than our wr
Their WR were faster than our guys.

At least that’s what I thought. I just don’t think we are landing true game breakers at WR just yet. And the guys we do get with those intangibles elite speed or prototypical size seem too soft/small/weak/slow. The small fast dudes are soft and weak (Harley/Pope) and the big are slow and soft (Wiggins,Langham) and none of them seem to be able to deal with press coverage.

But the guys we have will improve, or Mario will get guys to do the job.

Excited to see the playbook open and how the TE’s are used. Going to help the passing game really open up.

All the rb with explosive element are hurt, Knighton is best bet but has hamstring issue it seems so until thats resolved gonna have to roll with what we got. though Parrish isnt that guy, his vision and skillset will allow him to maximize what the offenive line give him out there.. He can rip 10-15 yard runs for now

We have to get some of these young LB caught up to speed, the guys we trot out there now are serviceable at best. ill just leave it at that

Everyone you named ain’t even here no more 🤦🏾‍♂️

LB & CB- we have to get the youngsters up to speed asap: Wesley, Chase, Curtis, Harris, and Graves will have to do whatever is necessary to eat into the reps of the incumbents so the overall team speed/athleticism on defense increases.

WR- can't say it's too surprising to hear only Key Smiff & Restrepo were creating consistent separation. Need to see a bit more of Brinson, Redding, and hopefully what Horton can do. George needs to be ready to roll right out the gate, he'll be needed as he's shown he can separate a bit more consistently and make contested catches.

Right, I was speaking in general terms. And in general, the guys we have are mostly unproven, but are showing similar signs in terms of not having enough of the right elite traits. Hence why no one has separated themselves.

Let’s be honest, these guys couldn’t beat out two UDFAs who both got cut. There ain’t no Andre Johnson, Santana, or Reggie Wayne in there. Because if there was, they’d have separated. Heck I’m not sure there’s a Daryl Jones or Kevin Beard in that room.

I’d throw the pass rush under yellow this game…

Idk if it’s from trying to not rush recklessly like they did under Manny but a whole lot of “almost” against a very inferior team…

They can get better but I was shocked at how many times we didn’t finish with a sack

Fair. Definitely have to finish better. But let's see how they react in game 2, same type of sack total (1) next week would definitely be concerning at that point.

Only 1 sack against an fcs team. Have to agree

Mario mentioned this specifically. He kinda said maybe because our qb is a statue and not live in practice could have been reason not used to getting qb down.. They say they will make some changes

Corners won’t be tested against southern miss. But they will have to tackle. Funny enough Ivey also sucks at tackling

I agree but is it possible that BCU's scheme had something to do with it? I haven't rewatched the game but I don’t recall many 5 and 7 step drops. Seems like they were making a concerted effort to get rid of the ball quickly.

How much if our WR’s i a ability to separate was because they BCU defensive backs were playing so far off?
On the TD pass to Redding, Khalil Brantley was wide open underneath and that was really the better throw.

Langham slander should be an auto-band.

How many college teams have an Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne or Santana Moss on their roster? In '21, Restrepo had more yards than Jones ever had in a season & was less than a 100 yds shy of Kevin Beard's best year. After this year, it won't be close. I think you're underestimating 7.
