BC and FAU and other thoughts

Obviously our beloved CANES beat BCC and FAU, and they looked a bit sloppy at times doing it. Yes, there are definite areas of concern, but the team is 2 and 0. I know that most everyone thought we would be 2 and 0 at this point, with the exception of a few so called "Canes fans" who are actively rooting for the team to loose so that another coach can be hired. I will not root for losses, I will continue to support this years CANES team, and that includes the coaches. That does not mean I agree with everything that the coaches do, I just will not actively trash them. I know that most CANES fans, myself included, are not fans of the defensive scheme that is currently being deployed, but they have forced 7 turnovers and got 7 sacks in the first two games (one turnover was on special teams). I would love to see an attacking style 4-3 defense like we have had in years past, the kind of defense that forces teams to make mistakes, rather than waiting for them to make mistakes. As for the offense I am not a fan of some of the play calling, like the bubble screens which all to often loose yardage or maybe manage a yard or two, but the offense has scored 89 points (44.5 PPG), gained over 900 yards (452 YPG), 484 yards passing on 39 completions (12.4 YPC) and 420 yards rushing on 70 attempts (6.0 YPC) in the first two games. Of course I know the level of competition was less than stellar obviously, but still these statistics are pretty good.

Of course now the question is, will the CANES be able to raise their level of play to compete against better competition. The CANES will get that opportunity on Saturday the 19th when Nebraska comes to town.

I would like to ask everyone if you were the coach, what three things would you work on for offense and three things on defense in preparation for the game against Nebraska? Please refrain from bashing the coaches, players and the administration. Just focus on what you would do as head coach of the CANES.

On offense, I would definitely focus on improving the blocking for the offensive line to provide better rushing lanes and make sure they protect Kaaya. Obviously, I would work on third downs conversions and definitely change up the play calling quite a bit.

On defense, I would focus on getting more pressure on the QB, shutting down the run game and tackling, tackling and more tackling.

I know that there will be a few snarky remarks and I fully expect to get ridiculed and bashed for my post, but I am hoping that there will at least be a few fans that will at least put a bit of effort into their follow up post and be constructive. So, here to looking forward to your follow up posts and lets support our CANES as the take on Nebraska. GO CANES.

'Canes are 6-24 on 3rd down conversions after B-CU and FAU. Only 4 FBS teams have worse 3rd down conversion percentages. I don't even understand how that's possible, yet some fools think the offense is better than absolute ****?

DS, No one is saying that the offense is all ACC or championship worthy. What is the most important thing for an offense to do, SCORE POINTS, and that is exactly what they did the last two weeks. They are averaging 44.5 PPG which is pretty good. Granted, the competition was average at best. Obviously there are things that need to be improved upon. We will get a chance to see how the CANES will do against stiffer competition on Saturday the 19th. I believe we will beat Nebraska and I think we will see improvement.

I want to see less Dallas Crawford. I love the kid but he's been exposed vs FAU and BC and the teams we are about to face have a higher caliber of player than those at BC and FAU. I want to see better tackling. I don't know what the solution is but it's ridiculous that we are still having tackling issues in year 5. Watching MSU-Oregon last night was a sobering experience.

One thing we are doing well is not turning the ball over so I hope it continues.

It's just really tough to gauge where this team is quality wise, because we haven't played anyone with a pulse.

Sorry, your post is the very definition of homerism. The competition is definitely not even close to average - FAU and BC are by far the easiest opponents on the schedule. 3rd down conversion was a glaring problem last year, which is due mainly to play calling. We're 2 games into the season, and we're already seeing the same trends as we did last season. How do you expect to see this number improve as we're start heading into the difficult part of our schedule?

The countdown is in the 70s, but needs an accelerant. Come on Nebraska.

Firing Day is 79 away.

According to OP, Bethune and FAU = "average" competition

Klama,

We get it, you hate Golden and staff. OK, now do you have anything of value to add to the discussion at hand?

O&G84,

I can see why you would think that. I know that the 3rd down issue is very serious and needs to be corrected. I know that we are seeing a similar pattern to last year and it is very concerning to me as well and if we do not get it fixed, it will cost us a few games this year. Right now, I believe we can correct this issue and I am focusing on the positives in that we have only turned the ball over once, we forced 7 turnovers and have six sacks, we are averaging 452 YPG, 44.5 PPG, and the team is undefeated. What will happen the rest of the season remains to be seen. So let us see how it plays out and root for our CANES. GO CANES!!!
