Barrow and recruiting

Yea, he sucks

Outliers are fun! He finished 46th in the ACC in 2010. 23rd in 2011. He wasn't top 50 in 2012 (out-recruited by Coach D I might add). 9th in 2013, 3rd in 2014 (your picture), and so far this year wasnt top 50 (6 other Miami coaches are). You can't single out a good year out of 7 years and say "look he's awesome he doesn't suck".

I like him as much as the next guy, but he's an overrated recruiter by most. Hes good, but very far from replaceable and even improvable. On top of that, he's **** near a terrible LB coach. Development at that spot over the last 7 years has been awful outside of McCarthy, Spence, and Perryman, and those guys could have been developed by a pet rock. I wish Barrow the best, but don't let loyalty and nepotism cloud the fact that it's going to be easy to improve on his work.

He was our top recruiter in 2014,2013, 2011, & 2008 according to 247. Those aren't outliers. If he's not good at recruiter than everyone else our staff must be really bad since everyone else didn't perform up to his standard.

I really believe LB play had more to do to complexity, mental errors, and lack of talent like Coach macho said Coach D told him. Our LB group was performing fine from 2007-2011.

Guys Barrow has performing in the NFL: current NFL linebackers Tavares Gooden, Darryl Sharpton, Colin McCarthy and Spencer Adkins and the graduated Spence. He also has perryman who will be in the league this year.

I'm not saying the man is elite at recruiting or coaching, but give credit where credit is due.

God I hate Tim Brewster....a mercenary douche salesman. I hope this trend of hiring Miami guys continues and ultimately differentiates us from the sleezy car salesmen like Brewster.

Barrow is a big loss, but haven't a lot kids spoke highly of hurlie also? NSD is still months away let's hope hurlie can build relationship with these LB recruits

I have total faith in Hurlie Brown, personally. I wish Mike Barrow the best, he was (IS!) one of my favorite players ever at Miami.

How will Barrow leaving impact recruiting? Anyone with some insight? Would love the feedback from Shaq's dad on this since it's his son's position coach.

TIA.

The impact is huge. He played a huge roll in Shaq's commitment to Miami. He was our connections.. when we had questions or concerns we contacted Coach Barrow, that connection has now been severed. Does this changes Shaq's commitment to UM... No... I think not. We do however need a new connection. Somebody we feel comfortable with... Darrion is working on getting me a contact number now for Coach Swasey. Hopefully Coach Barrow's replacement has the same desires for Shaq (really genuine about Shaq being apart of the program). But what more important than Shaq's recruitment... is the lost to a great staff member at Miami. I'm not abreast of all the history of Coach Barrow's recruiting and player development. What I can attest to is.. he immediately won over the confidence of my wife and I... He is truly a Hurricane at heart... He was at one of our games recruiting Darrion and Shaq. He and I were talking down on the field after a game ppl every where. He was busy recruiting Shaq when he noticed a young lady wearing a Hurricane jacket... He said excuse me for one second.. then approached the young lady in the jacket.. and said ma'am.. I like your jacket and she smiled and started talking with him about it... Not knowing the young lady was the mother of Bennie, Brian and Al Blades (whos nephew is the QB on Shaq's Team) he went out of his way to acknowledged someone else who obviously had feelings for the U. And if he is leaving for family reasons... I have that much more respect for him... having his priorities in order.... He is missed already and may God add an extra blessing to he and his family.

To add to this, Barrow is a guy that when he speaks to families of recruits hardly any of it is football related and he always included everyone in the conversation whether it's extended family members to close friends. He was the one coach that pulled Jordan Cronkrite to the side at the spring game before it started and sat down with him for about 40 minutes and talked and basically sealed the deal for Cronkrite because he knows where Jordan was coming from and what being close to his family meant to him. He was very easy to talk to and I can tell you Hurlie is a lot like Barrow so for Shaq it would be more about just getting to know him and building the bond.

I'm looking forward to talking with him. We have somethings in common...he was raised in Brevard County and both my parents are from Brevard County. My brother seems to think he may have worked for Hurlie's father.. Hopefully we will talk soon...

Get this man in touch with Hurlie stat.

Thanks for all the info you bring, probably the best insight from a family prospective we have ever had.

A sabbatical means he's back next year.

Does everyone not believe that?

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Linebackers coach Micheal Barrow is taking a sabbatical from coaching to devote his time and attention to a family matter.

“As a proud University of Miami graduate, former football player and coach, it is with a heavy heart that I announce I'm taking a sabbatical from coaching this season,” Barrow said. “This was an extremely tough decision to leave my dream job. However, I have a very important family obligation that requires my full attention, and I would not have had enough time to effectively fulfill my coaching duties.

“With the 2014 football season starting soon, please know that I am truly sorry if my decision brings the organization any inconveniences. I would like to thank President Shalala, Blake James, Al Golden, the coaching staff, UM football players and the entire UM family for seven great years. During this time, my professional career has grown and afforded me wonderful opportunities on and off the field. I have enjoyed working alongside some excellent colleagues and privilege to coach some great kids. I will never forget my tenure at the U and I'm looking forward to watching them this year. Go Canes!”

Head football coach Al Golden wished Barrow and his family the best, and said the Hurricane legend will be missed.

“Coach Barrow has always put faith and family first in his life and this is clearly a time in his life where family needs him,” Golden said. “Micheal Barrow is the very definition of a Miami Hurricane - having given 11 years of class, service and leadership to the University and our community. We wish Micheal, Shelly and their children all the best as they enter a new chapter in their lives and we certainly hope Mike will return to coaching and mentoring young people in the near future.”

Barrow’s departure has resulted in subsequent promotions of two current Hurricanes staff members. Former running back coach and two-time national champion Hurlie Brown will move to the defensive side of the ball as linebackers coach for his 15th year of coaching. In addition, assistant director of operations and national champion Tim “Ice” Harris has been promoted to running backs coach. Finally, former Hurricane captain and national champion Kevin Beard will replace Harris as assistant director of football operations.

Brown, who completed his first season as Hurricanes running backs coach in 2013, will shift back to the defense where he spent his playing career in the orange and green as a standout Hurricanes safety.

“Words cannot explain how fired up I am about going back to coaching on the defensive side of the ball,” Brown said. “The defensive side of the ball has always had a very special place in my heart. And to be given the opportunity now in my career to be able to coach linebackers at the University of Miami is a dream come true.

“I have played on the defensive side of the ball all my life, safety, corner, linebacker and some defensive line. My passion and love for football has always come from a defensive mindset. Aggressive play, physical play and playing with a high motor are all defensive terms that have helped fueled me to love this game. I know I can help instill my love for the game and the University of Miami in the young men that are playing linebacker for the Hurricanes today. It is truly a blessing from God!”

Golden said Brown’s mentality is a perfect fit for his defensive staff.

“When I informed Hurlie Brown about the vacancy on defense he was sad to leave the running backs he coached and recruited, yet equally excited about the opportunity to return to the defensive side of the ball,” Golden said. “Hurlie brings with him 14 years of coaching and playing experience at four different defensive positions. His time on offense has made him a better coach, and Hurlie has always had a great rapport with our players, regardless of their position, so I know his transition back to defense will be a seamless one. We are excited to add Hurlie Brown and his attacking mindset to our defensive staff.”

Harris, who has more than 24 years of high school coaching experience and recently joined the staff as assistant director of football operations from nearby national powerhouse Booker T. Washington High School, was promoted to running backs coach.

“I am so excited to be the running backs coach at the University of Miami. Having been born and raised in Miami and also a high school football coach in Miami, words cannot explain how I feel about this great opportunity, “Harris said. “It’s a dream come true. I have a great passion and love for the game of football and developing young men to help them achieve their maximum potential every day and also be great in the community.”

Golden is excited to shift Harris into his new position.

“I’m extremely happy for Ice Harris and his family,” Golden said. “Ice has been a winner, teacher and mentor to young people in South Florida for more than 20 years and is excited to share his wisdom with our student-athletes here at The U! Coach Harris brings a championship mindset founded on discipline and toughness to the running backs room. Born and raised in Miami, Ice is an excellent recruiter and is excited to continue the many relationships he has formed here in the Miami community and throughout the state over the years. It is with great respect and admiration that we welcome the National Champion Ice Harris to our staff as running backs coach.”

A member of the Hurricanes team that won the 2001 national championship, Beard will join the staff from his most recent position as coach on the University School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) coaching staff.

“I am truly thankful for this opportunity. I understand that this opportunity does not come around often. To come back to my alma mater, a place that has shaped me to be the man that I am today is truly a blessing,” Beard said. “I am excited to get started with this new chapter in my life. I hope to pass on the legacy that was passed on to me during my tenure here to bring a national championship back to the Miami Hurricanes.”

Golden is excited about welcoming a member of the Hurricanes community back to the football staff in Coral Gables.

“We are very fortunate to add Kevin Beard to our staff. As a former team captain of a national championship team here, he truly understands what it means to be a student-athlete at The University of Miami,” Golden said. “His diverse background as a player, teacher, coach, and trainer enables him to contribute in a unique way, and we’re looking forward to him sharing his experience with our team. His work ethic and personality will be welcome additions to our staff. I am excited to have him rejoin the U Family.”

UKnow,

Whatever happens with your son's recruiting saga, I thank you for your heart and dedication to your son. I personally tear up when my 7 year old son steps in the batter's box in a machine-pitch baseball league in KY. I can't even imagine or relate to how you must feel with the acclaim and attention that your son has drawn from his talent, work, and determination. You are a wonderful person -it's very apparent from your posts- and I wish you and your son the all the best. Good luck raising your son from now until the Spring of 2019, when I hope your son is a humble first-round pick in the NFL draft. I love Miami and I hope it is the spot that you and your son feel is the best place for him to play and develop as a talent and person. I'll be looking for your son (and will probably buy my son a jersey with your son's number) and cheering him on wherever he lands. Godspeed

Yea, he sucks

This stuff means even less than recruiting class rankings.

Does anybody remember some time back when Barrow had some of his coaching responsibilities whittled down, perhaps during Shannon's period? I got the feeling that he might have been a bit over his head with some things, but maybe not.

How will Barrow leaving impact recruiting? Anyone with some insight? Would love the feedback from Shaq's dad on this since it's his son's position coach.

I'm looking forward to talking with him. We have somethings in common...he was raised in Brevard County and both my parents are from Brevard County. My brother seems to think he may have worked for Hurlie's father.. Hopefully we will talk soon...

I'm from Brevard, having gone to Cocoa and then Cocoa Beach High, when it was built in 1964. It was probably a lot different back then. Cocoa High was then where Rockledge High is now, I think. When I went to school, the schools were pretty much still segregated, It was a very different era. The year I moved over to the new school, Cocoa Beach, 1964, was the year that I remember the first African-American football player playing for an integrated school, when Charlie Wilson was a starter in tenth grade for Cocoa High. He went on to play at Penn State. I think Hurlie's father's name might have been Hurlie, too. I seem to have a recollection of that. Hurlie went to Merritt Island High, which had some good teams over the last 40 years, including some state championships. We got Hurlie, Daryl Spencer, Joe Kohlbrand, the Ham Brothers, and a few others from M.I. I think Clint Hurdle signed to play QB at Miami but went into baseball instead. Kenny Calhoun was from Titusville, Matt Walters, I think, was from Eau Gallie. David Kintigh was from Satellite Beach, Corries Hardy and Dallas Cameron were from Melbourne, I think. Ramon Buchanan was from Palm Bay. I think those are the guys from Brevard whom I remember.

So, we've had a long history with Brevard.

Where were your parents from? They might be closer to my age.

Love the thing about the "young girl" wearing a Canes jacket. Mother of Al, Bennie and Brian? Well, Bennie and Brian played about 25 or 30 years ago, they would be in their late '40's now. So she would have to be in her '60's, I would think. I guess I'm young too.

Here's a link to the athletic department staff directory, with phone numbers and emails. I guess an individual coach can give out his cell:

You can always find this directory on the athletic department website. Just go to hurricanesports.com.

Pimp and Uknow--the bond and love of a parent with their children is the greatest gift for that parent. As parents your thoughts, feelings and love for your kids shows the type of parents you are, your children will be--you guys just get it.

Barrow was an excellent recruiter, but on the aggregate, I think the recruiting staff got better this week. Unleashing Ice on the road and bringing KB on staff are big ******* deals.

You know, people on here were so quick, at times, to make nasty comments about Barrow, and how he was disliked with some people in south Florida. I was dumbfounded by theses statements. I live far away from south Florida, and have no contact with the community or many of my booster friends anymore. Still, I thought this guy was universally liked and respected, a south Florida kid that did well and came back. I don't know how good he was as a coach, but someone said he's got more LBs in the NFL than Ohio State. That's impressive. I'm sorry he's gone. Hurlie didn't play the position but he should understand LB play. He should know defense better than he knows RB, one would think.

Barrow couldnt even get his own nephew Lane to consider us without mocking us

Don't know the kid Lane but that might be more of a reflection on Lane's character than Barrow. From afar, I didn't have the highest opinion of Lane. I could be wrong, though.
