Bama's Plan

FWIW, here's an article about Bama's coaching search from just before Saban was hired.

In addition to Rich Rod turning them down, they also got turned down by Saban at first, as well as Spurrier. Those are all respectable first-line candidates. But I thought this was interesting:

"It wasn't clear who the Tide will turn to now, though the university's original wish list also included Navy's Paul Johnson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe and possibly California's Jeff Tedford."

Jim Grobe? Paul Johnson?

Also, in 2000, they offered and were turned down by Frank Beamer and our own Butch Davis.

Also interesting: Bama reportedly offered Rich Rod 2 mil/yr. That was 9 years ago. Amazing how coaching salaries have skyrocketed in less than a decade.

There's an arms race in College Football that's going to affect the NFL. Big time pro coaches like Harbaugh can go to Michigan and be the Lords and Masters of their domains and not have to produce by Season 2 or be dumped. The NFL is a Produce Now or begone league.

The NCAA s going to start raiding the League for coaching talent. A lot of these schools have boosters and endowments that allow them to do this. Big Programs like OSU and Florida won't mind going after league talent. USCw, as well.

Where that will leave Miami is trying to play catchup with innovative coaching and recruiting.

It's a tough room.

take a look at Bama...they knew they were going nowhere and needed the "RIGHT" coach. they decided on the guy they believed could get them to the promised land.

they went after "Moses" Saban and did whatever it took to get him .

no search committee, no 35 candidates. no wishy-washy AD.

they had a plan and focused like a laser - check the results !

sure would be nice if Miami could do just that......be focused and have a plan and the right people in charge.

hire the RIGHT coach - Butch Davis- and lets get on with it.

Most Miami fans are in denial at this point when it comes to this job and big time coaches. The level of interest and respect between Bama and Miami is a wide gap. No coach in their right mind would choose Miami over a school like Bama, or anything remotely close. The admin over the years has killed this program. They had a real shot in the early 2000's to raise the overall athletic program to great heights. They failed miserably while other programs went full steam ahead into the modern era. Miami has had a great run through football but they are squarely behind the times. I think fans over value the location of the program in regard to the recruiting base. If you are good enough, you can win at most any location. Does that mean win national titles, not necessarily, but win a lot of games and get yourself into a conference title situation every few years; which could place you at the final four.

I don't think coaches look at Miami the same way the fans do. They see Miami in the modern light while Cane fans are still caught up in the past. Does that mean Miami can't achieve greatness again, no, but I am not sure coaches (at least the ones we want) see it as an easy road to victory.

Coaches may show a cursory interest, but its probably more of a check the box type of thing with multiple jobs open. I have said this from day one. Miami will be left with Butch instead of choosing Butch.
