FWIW, here's an article about Bama's coaching search from just before Saban was hired.
In addition to Rich Rod turning them down, they also got turned down by Saban at first, as well as Spurrier. Those are all respectable first-line candidates. But I thought this was interesting:
"It wasn't clear who the Tide will turn to now, though the university's original wish list also included Navy's Paul Johnson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe and possibly California's Jeff Tedford."
Jim Grobe? Paul Johnson?
Also, in 2000, they offered and were turned down by Frank Beamer and our own Butch Davis.
Also interesting: Bama reportedly offered Rich Rod 2 mil/yr. That was 9 years ago. Amazing how coaching salaries have skyrocketed in less than a decade.
There's an arms race in College Football that's going to affect the NFL. Big time pro coaches like Harbaugh can go to Michigan and be the Lords and Masters of their domains and not have to produce by Season 2 or be dumped. The NFL is a Produce Now or begone league.
The NCAA s going to start raiding the League for coaching talent. A lot of these schools have boosters and endowments that allow them to do this. Big Programs like OSU and Florida won't mind going after league talent. USCw, as well.
Where that will leave Miami is trying to play catchup with innovative coaching and recruiting.
It's a tough room.
