Back home, some thoughts/reflections on the Cotton Bowl win..

As stated, masterful job by Dawson. Every single one of those passing yards were such clutch calls and executions. The throw to Brown and screen to CJ were game clinchers. Dawson calls another game and we are lucky to score 7.

In general I never thought I see the day, but Miami downright out coached Taint last night. Day actually made some nice adjustments at the half but Heatherman readjusted. Dawson was ahead of Patricia the whole night and it mitigated their talent advantage there.

One of the key adjustments I think Heatherman made was sending 31 up the middle when O$U* started gashing us there in the second half. Seemed to work even though I haven't rewatched.

Not to take anything away from Bandy's pick six, but Keionte's pick was equal parts football IQ and skill. He read the play like he was in their huddle and went for the pick in stride because he knew he could pull it off. That's confidence.

Keionte's football IQ is Einstein-esque. His ability to process things quickly is incredible...

- anyone get Trajan Bandy vs Notre Dame in 2017 vibes on his pick-six? 'Agent Zero' has incredible. His ability to play inside the box, while still being a playmaking ballhawk, it's almost like he's a 12th defender at times. In a game that you figure to be low-scoring and a one-possesion game, plays like this are huge.

There it is. Yes. K. Scott is like having a 12th man. Somehow when he’s out there it seems like Miami has an extra defender on the field. There aren’t too many guys who fit that description, but he does.

So I'm back home in Los Angeles (and Happy New Year to everyone) after spending the last couple of days in Dallas/Arlington to see the Miami Hurricanes advance to the semi-finals of the College Football Playoff as they defeated THE Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 24-14 at AT@T Stadium, which still has the new stadium smell.

I was part of a group that made a pact that said as long as the #canes continue on, we'll be there. Well, off to Scottsdale, Arizona we go. But some quick thoughts on last night's game...

- I hear a lot of people talking about how this exorcised the demons of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl -- a game that I attended -- but I don't look at it quite like that. To me, this is really about Miami re-establishing itself as a real football proGRUM and further proof of concept for Mario Cristobal's vision for the program. In year four, he has Miami in the football final four. UM is now back to being a respected team nationally.

- Carson Becks stat line may look pedestrian(he threw for under 150 yards) but I thought he managed that game brilliantly. He stayed turnover free (unlike Julian Sayin) and he made accurate passes all night. He understood that throwing windows would be relatively tight and close quickly, but he delivered some really accurate throws that kept drives moving

Again, this was another game where every yard and first down mattered. Ohio State has multiple NFL guys on every level of that defense. And he got his Randall Cunningham on as he used his legs/feet to get key yards that moved the chains. He wasn't afraid to put his body in harms way. There are lies, **** lies... and statistics. Don't let the numbers deceive you, Beck played exactly the way Miami needed him to

- As for Ohio State, I don't think Miami will play a more talented squad the remainder of this tournament (but that alone doesn't guarantee victories), they have a Heisman Trophy finalist at QB, the best overall player in the country in Jeremiah Smith and just about every room has a couple of guys who will earn a living playing football after they leave Columbus

- I cant lie, at 17-14, Buckeyes convert at 3rd and 15, who else had that sinking feeling that this was going in the wrong direction? But once again, Heatherman's **** Raisers shut the door and set up the game-clinching drive

- Can we give credit to Shannon Dawson? The prevailing thought was he was over-matched by the football acumen of Matt Patricia. He called a very solid game, with some nice wrinkles and didn't over-think it/

- Much is made of Cristoabl and his game management. My personal view is that I wish he'd play at a quicker tempo at times offensively, but as you get deep into the playoffs, you may not get into that many shootouts and you have to find ways to keep guys like Bain and Mesidor fresh. So grinding the clock in this circumstance at this time of the season isn't the worst thing. Last thing Miami had the ball for 33 plus minutes.

Miami played very good situational football last night (which included the kicking/punting game). Cristobal was very good last night.

- Marty 'Mar' Brown is one of my personal favorites on this team. It's been mystifying at times why he hasn't played more (but to be fair, Mark Fletcher is rolling right now), but this guy came cold off the bench to catch a key third down pass which was a tough grab (Beck had to actually back shoulder that thing a bit). Then he ripped off a big run, and then the TD

There's a lot of teams that Brown would play a bigger role, but he's made some key plays for Miami this season (go back to that one-handed grab vs Florida that he took for 16 yards when the game was 13-6 in the fourth quarter that re-energized the offense that drive) and he has just willingly played his role.

- Much is made over Miami's attendance, and yeah, some of it his valid. But inside the stadium, I'm not saying it was 50-50 in terms of support last night, but they were certainly more than a few thousand Hurricane faithful at 'Jerry's World' on Wednesday night and we were loud. Canes Nation showed up -- and I get the sense they will continue to for as long as this ride lasts. The momentum is only building with this

- Finally, huge win for Miami and Cristoabal. But the job isn't done. In fact, they are only halfway home. At that point, they would be 'back'. This is a team built to win now
Outstanding recap my friend. A couple of things:
-I don't believe the impact of this game (especially over OSU) will be truly realized for years to come. The 2003 loss was very difficult to deal with (obviously), but we didn't realize the long-term ramifications at that time. If anyone would have told you at the time that we would spend the next 20+ years in purgatory, wondering through the wilderness, they would have laughed out of SFL.

-Beck has fallen victim to the "QB worship" mentality and, more to the point, the SEC/ESPN propaganda machine. In many ways, he reminds me of Ken Dorsey in that he's not the most dynamic player nor will he be THE reason we win a championship, but he will more often than not make the play; make the check; make the read that will be the deciding factor in winning or losing. He is A piece to a championship team, not THE piece.

- Similar to Beck, Mario's masterful management of this game will be largely ignored and/or outright dismissed because it doesn't fit the narrative. In many respects, he is a meathead, but he's our meathead.

-Now, on to Arizona. It's interesting, Buckeye fans will say that we've already won our SB (they're arrogance is nauseating), but I contend that they were just a yield sign that we plowed through on our way to #6. UGA fans feel they've caught a break...keep thinking that, Bub.

I agree with you on the Miami attendance. I'm not saying it was 50-50, and the swath of red shirts in the 100's level on the Taint side of the field WAS impressive...

But if FELT LIKE we had 35-40% of the crowd (even if some were just Taint-haters). When we made big plays, we sounded just as loud as the Taint fans cheering big plays. Maybe I'm biased, but that's what I heard.

Fantastic game. We had some Taint fans a couple of rows in front of us (50 yard line, Miami side) and it was hilarious.

There were two Taint fans (an Asian gentleman and his son, nothing personal) that seemed like they had never been to a football game before. The looks of dismay on their faces as they turned around to look at the Miami fans...PRICELESS...and then the other Taint fans in front of us went full-2017-Irish on us, disappearing into the club area instead of staying in their seats and weathering the Miami taunts...

GREAT NIGHT! One for the ages!

I’ve been down on Beck’s unwillingness to fight for extra yards most of the year, but tonight he dug his nose in at every opportunity. Respect the **** out of that.

Also, he went on a rampage throwing the ball. He had like 12+ completions in a row. Looked absolutely cool and in control like the vet he is, and that’s exactly what we need to keep the train moving.
13 in a row and set a Cotton Bowl record

Agree on Beck… I think following ward it was hard not to see a QB be a super hero at times but that’s not his game. He truly will run your offense and put a premium on making competitions and letting playmakers do their thing

as we were driving out from the game back to the team hotel, Chris L who was driving said, ''Tonight was for all the terrible walks out of stadiums we took, all the shhhh we took as fans, all the bad games," and I added all the early 9 am PT start times for meaningless ACC games, all the heartbreak and disappointment the past couple of decades

We're not done, this team should concede nothing as far as this season is concerned. But it was cathartic what took place last night

Forgot to mention this, but one of the big plays in the #canes win was before they're final TD drive, Ohio St's Joe McGuire had a great punt that Malachi Toney fair caught at the 10. But a penalty wiped that out. Next punt Toney catches it at the 30. That 20 yard difference was huge

In a game where every yard is crucial, and penalties scarce, this was huge
