....and it's the greatest feeling in the world. What's the MasterCard commercial say:'Priceless'.
I don't want to rehash too much of the game since I'm sure much of it has already been stated and I haven't seen the replay(yet). But here's a few things that come to mind:
- Love the new wrinkles in the running game, from the Dallas-cat package to the new counter play off the jet-motion that ND was completely unprepared for. Richt and Co are really evolving the offense week to week and you can see the added elements as the season goes on.
- Miami's red-zone offense is still problematic and you can see the staff( as was mentioned just above) getting more creative. The Oline still can't get a real push in the run game from in close.
- Great seeing Lawrence Cager make some plays. I know some here had already filed his paper work to FAMU but it's obvious he can still fill a role here and be an effective player.
- The defense, well, what more can be said? This was the unit I think we were all anticipating at the beginning of the year and Senor Diaz crafted a masterpiece of a game plan last night vs a vaunted ND unit that had been steam rolling teams. After that initial drive that was some vintage Miami Hurricane defense: fast, violent and swarming. The left side of the ND line which was so hyped got exposed a bit in pass pro by the likes of Joe Jax and and the Garvinator. And the two tackles look like guys ready to play in the NFL. McIntosh is playing at an elite, All-American level.
- Jaquan Johnson has really become an elite player. I'd be stunned if he isn't at least All-ACC at the of this season. Wanted to point out Dee Delaney, I noticed two plays, one was where he stuffed Josh Adams in run support and another where he took on a pulling lineman and just stood him up and set the edge nicely. Great to have DD back in the rotation.
- How bout this '17 freshman class: Bandy, Dallas, D-Smith, Carter, Garvin, Big Navaugn, Thomas all made plays.
- The Turnover Chain is something else, the crowd really gets into it( even more than touchdowns it seems) and it absolutely jacks up the crowd and the sideline and they play off one another. Which leads me to the point I really wanted to make:
- Hard Rock Stadium is now one of the great home field advantages in college football and that place gets incredibly loud. But for this game, from the very first kickoff till victory formation with Sheriffs, we never let up. Especially when the Miami defense was on the field. The players on the sidelines would exhort the audience for more noise and we'd oblige. Third downs with the 'White Stripes' is something else with the crowd chanting along with it. There is no doubt the noise and the emotion created by the partisans absolutely made a difference. A ND player said in the press conference that this was the loudest game/venue he had ever been in. So yeah, I say all of us there should be awarded a game ball for our efforts.(So buy a football, and put 'Game Ball, Miami-ND, Nov 11th, 2017' and put it in your trophy case.)
BTW, I saw a small sliver of ND fans. I mean, forget the 50-50 that Rick Neweasel claimed, it had to be no more than 5,000 and most of them in the usual section for the visiting team.
the tailgate scene at the Rock for big games is insane. (In honor of this rivalry I went back to the 80's and had some Bacardi and Cokes - something I hadn't consumed in about 25 years). But there was no doubt that this was the biggest regular season game Miami had played since they moved to this stadium and the Cane community came out and really made a statement. If you are a recruit at this event and you don't jump aboard now, well, I don't know what to say. Miami-Notre Dame was the biggest sporting event in America on Saturday night and a huge statement was made.
-Finally, met up with our guy Austin P and 'the Big Cheese' and had a great time. Also, at the tailgate I was at was Markese Fitzgerald, who seems to be doing very well in his life, brought his two daughters. Told us some great stories of the 2001 team and his time at UM. Very nice guy.(I got a kick out of him telling me he hated when we went 'Coker-T' back in the day, lol)
- Ok, onto an improved UVA squad and Senior Day. Yeah, I expect a bit of a hangover(from players and fans) but this is a game Miami should win.
This is just the beginning, so much more to be accomplished by this squad. But I ask this question to several people last night and this morning: If Miami plays at this level - who can't they beat?
