Attendance...

What else is F-ing new??...At the 81 #1 Penn St vs UM game, there might have been 40,000...Yeah it was slightly raining for awhile...but it was #1 Penn St, 2yrs after upsetting them in UnHappy Valley....

I'm thinking of traveling from up north to see a game and half the reason is because the stadium is so cool. Very South Florida.

Yeah. A game against Bethune Cookman prior to the renovation would have maybe 10k there. Pleasantly surprised at the attendance last weekend.
The Dolphins sell out and the Heat draws well. But we don't. So it's not about events...

This. It’s always been this way. Miami is an event city. Media will never understand that this isn’t Tuscaloosa, Lincoln, NE etc. Most casual fans would rather do something else than see us hang 60 on Bethune. However, that same casual fan is the clown who has the audacity to ask me if I have an extra FSU ticket.

Even before this year's dumpster fire, the Dolphins very rarely sold out home games. And on days where the stadium was "full," quite a few of the fans cheering were going for the away team. And I've been to Heat games since LeBron left where it's at less than half capacity.

It's not a Canes problem. It's a Miami problem.

The UVA game will be sparsely attended imo. Most fans these days attend games because of tailgating and there won't be any time for that on a Friday.

Not only was it a small crowd but it departed early. Those of us who stuck around got to see the Jimmy Murphy stuff. We were commenting at how happy we were to have been there for that, instead of already in the parking lot or long gone.

The crowd was so sparse at the end that I got in my car and drove smack out of there without any stoppages until I needed to make the U turn in front of the RaceTrac gas station on NW 27th Ave. Those of you familiar with the area will know what I am referring to. Normally there are stoppages and logjams galore, in the parking lot and multiple times before ever arriving at NW 27th Ave. It can take 20-30 minutes just to get to that gas station. This time I was cruising around corners with nothing in front of me.

Agreed. It was not larger than expected. We were all commenting how empty it was for a home opener. The regular season ticket holders always show up for the first game since it's been marked and anticipated for months. That's why caliber of opponent or won/loss record is not as relevant for that game. But they didn't do a good job at all of filing the optional seats.

I will say one thing...it was tremendously comfortable for a mid September game. Not oppressive at all. Unusually good air circulation in the upper deck and even an occasional nice cool breeze. I was shocked. Several of us were looking around wondering if something had been changed to the stadium, or if it were merely an unusually favorable set of circumstances including wind direction.
Game vs CMU tomorrow will be even cooler.

Hard to believe we can't muster 60K hardcore fans to put that many in the stands for every game. We have to rely on a smaller base of hardcore fans plus casual fans to reach 60K?

The population of South Florida has grown tremendously since the early '60's yet we probably had almost as many hardcore fans back then. And I recognize that we had no competition back then (like the Dolphins).

Saw that game on national TV...it was a great game, helped herald our entrance, or re-entrance, back onto the national scene.

I was there and I think 52k is pretty close at a point. Our fans never get there early and are never there in the late 2nd and early 3rd quarters. I think start of the second quarter the stadium looked pretty nicely pacted. The canes side was almost 80% full.

Way different times now for certain, in the "old" days Miami High vs Jackson would draw 50K to the OB. I bet if you did a poll on what your favorite sport was in South Florida, Palm Beach to Key West, college football would come in around 25% at best. Too many foreigners and transplants.

This "event town" thing is only a part of it. A UiF or F$U has so many students that only a small percentage of them need to be interested in going to a game for the student section to be full. For ours to be full, a much larger percentage have to go.

Second, these big state schools have ****eloads of alums. They can be very casual fans who may go to a game only once every 2 years. But guess what? There are a lot of them, so that adds up quickly for an individual game. We don't have that kind of numerical affiliation.

Third, we are located at a geographic extreme. Other than F$U, no one sells their away allotment. Ever been to a game vs. GT or UNC? There are literally 50 away fans. A school like UGA, which is close to Atlanta, will ALWAYS have its away allotment sold and asses in the seats. We can't count on that.

If anything, the fact that we are a small private school at a geographic extreme, means we actually outdraw what should be expected of us. The attendance issue is really tiring.
