Assuming the rumor is true, VT is handling it the best way possible. This gives them a chance to interview immediately, and announce a new HC just as the season ends. The new HC would hit the ground running.

We should be doing the same.

Meh. I'm not worried about that aspect of it. Living in Miami isn't for everyone. And the toxicity surrounding this program right now due to the incompetence of the administration doesn't make the job look very enticing.

Money and timing is important.
A school such as VT may never win a title whereas UM may someday, but the college football
landscape has changed these days and coaches are looking at many factors.
And it sounds like VT is starting to move in the direction of positioning themselves to come at
coaches ASAP, and with alot of commitment (read: money).

I'm in full agreement on the "South Florida isn't for everyone" theory.

But for coaches coming from Houston or Memphis ... IMO, Coral Gables/Miami is closer to their current location than Blacksburg, VA is.

As for the toxicity, that can be overcome fairly easily.

Explain to the prospective candidates that you're willing to take the heat that comes along with giving them the time necessary to be successful at their job. I think the heat Blake James is under is a selling point to prospective coaching candidates .... It's more than words when he says he will back his coaches, even when it's unpopular to do so.

The issue for James will be committing resources to the next coach for staff and continued facilities upgrade, IMO. And that's what I mean by shutting down the program if we can't make a more compelling case than VT ...

I'm thinking Matt Campbell is a more realistic option for them.

I could see VT or UVA taking Matt Campbell maybe Matt Rhule.

I could see Ill, Purdue or Rutgers trying to get a "**** coordinator" like Pitt did. Perhaps Pruitt, Collins, Durkin and Norvell come to mind.

I think USC will go the NFL route but at the same time try to pry Wittingham.

I think South Carolina will try to do something stupid after they try to get Dantonio.

I get your point ... But, objectively, neither the current AD or President are responsible for the Al Golden hire or extension.

I know a lot of us live and die with everything that goes on at Hecht. But, mots don't have the intimate history most of us have.

And if I'm Blake, I can easily spin the recent capital campaign, the increase in staff salaries, improved facilities, new Adidas contract, increased ACC TV revenue, and the fact that the next coach is MY FIRST TRUE HIRE.

... If I can support a guy I didn't hire or extend, imagine the support I can provide to a guy I actually hire?

Cambpell would be a great hire - upbeat offense and VT's ability to land really good skill position players is a dangerous combo. Add that to a coal shoveling defense and you get a pretty darn good team.

I'm sure that would be Beamer's choice as Foster has been his loyal assistant for many years, plus retaining Foster means that
Beamer's son Shane remains employed at VT.
But I don't think that is what will occur.
Their new AD appears to be a smart dude.
