Assuming we knew Golden was a chump

I was super happy with the Golden hire, everyone loved it, his intro presser was a home run. He was a great salesman. He rebuilt Temple, imagine what he can do at Miami. That offseason, he had two guys go first two rounds in the draft (Wilkerson and Jarrett), I thought Miami would back to having a killer defense with pros all over. I don't think there was a better candidate out there, Gruden was a message board fantasy

Yeah everybody can pretend that they knew he would suck, but the truth is that there wasn't anyone clearly better that we could have gotten. Hiring a coach is always a gamble, no matter who they are. Saban might come here and suck it. Sure it's less likely that with some other guys, but nobody's not immune to failure. Sadly, al was about the best we had a shot at back then.

Looking back, yeah, he sucked. The problem with Golden is that he stayed on too long. Should have canned him after 2013.

Wrong.

They should have canned him after the 2011 BC game. I was tempted to say after the 2011 Maryland game, but nobody realized at the time that would be the Terps only FBS win.

We lost 5 starters days before md game

We still lost by 8 points at home.

Even if the starters played Golden would have lost that game.

Slim pickins back then. I was in a bar when I saw that we were going to hire Jon Gruden on the bottom line of ESPN..I was so happy then we hired AL Golden. I Have been drunk ever since.

Sack up and hire butch.

This never gets old for you does it? Whatever happens, the answer is Butch! Butch will get your wife to have *** with you again! Butch will restore your receding hairline! Butch will make you forget that you're stuck in middle management until you get fired!

We should have hired Chris Peterson (U Washington HC) when we had the chance.

IIRC He interviewed, but Kirby HolRcutt decided on the used car salesman from Jersey

I wanted Petersen, but EVERYONE knew he was a pipe dream. Wasn't leaving the Northwest, and the fact that he's since taken the Washington job confirms that perspective, IMO.

Leach would have been a good choice, except he was freshly fired for punishing the James kid.

In retrospect, Sumlin probably would have been a good hire. But there's no way we would have hired a 5-7 coach.

Franklin and Holgorsen seem like better fits than Golden was, but the admin was adamant about hiring a coach with HC experience.

So, knowing only what was known back then, we probably should have swallowed our pride and hired Dan Mullen or Todd Graham. I think both of those guys would have been better than Golden.

Graham probably bolts for Arizona State after the NCAA mess, but Mullen probably does the same contract leverage Golden did and stays.

With Mullen, we probably still hire Diaz as DC, and the O is probably a full spread option team.

Not gonna debate Mullen's coaching chops anymore. But with his recruiting ties to Florida from his time with UF, his national title pedigree at UF, his coaching tree ties to Urban Meyer, and the fact that his offense fits the Miami recruiting base pretty well suggests he really should have been the choice in 2010, IMO.

the game was at UMD... not that it makes much difference. But losing 5 starters days before a game on the road is gonna be tough for anyone.

I guess it was on the road- I forget where the game was played at this point. I still believe he would have lost the game even with the 5 starters.

Petersen is pretty well recorded to never want to leave the Northwest. He's supposed to like the medical care his son can get for a rare skin condition there. Petersen was rumored to have turned down the USCw job when Sarkisian was hired.

I was there, it was terrible. That said, you have to be a special kind of pessimist to think the first game tells you what you'll get over the next 5 years. At the time I was happy that the team managed a whole quarter without a penalty and looked like they had learned to tackle...both things that randy had trouble with. In retrospect, no improvement had really been made in either of these areas.

The point is that you don't really know what you'll have in a few years based on this year. Could be al or 2000 butch, we'll have to wait and see.
