Assuming we get a PK this offseason, what specific X'&O's adjustments will win the Coastal?

Yes, we all want a complete Fleet ***** of the football staff from top to bottom, but we've discussed all that and will continue to harp on it.

What I'm curious about is what specific X'&O's and scheme adjustments, no matter who is coaching the O, do we need to make in order to beat out UNC, VT and UVA for the Coastal in 2020? Here are 4 that come to mind:
  • Operate most of our sets in such a way that we spread out our receivers, ala Erickson or a Spread. Whatever name you want to put on it (Enos doesn't know), I think we need to spread out our players if for no other reason than for the OL to be able to see who they have coming at them. This will also necessitate more bubble screens, RB screens, TE screens, slants, etc.
  • We need to roll the pocket more. We had way too many 7 step straight drop backs which typically ended in bad things for us. When you move the pocket, does it reduce your passing options? Yep. Does moving the pocket reduce your sacks, QB pressures and open up more impromptu QB scrambles for extra yards? Yep.
  • More shifts on the regular, not just a 1st drive against Florida or something. D's need to constantly, in every game, worry about where Pope is moving to or Lingard, or etc.
  • More non-traditional running plays. Yes, I want our RB's to pound the rock, but on the regular, we need to have end arounds, reverses, and for the love of God, we need more wildcat!
The thing is, all of these things occurred at different times this past year, but there was NO consistency. If anything, we need consistency with these things.

With today’s game. 30 ppg should be the baseline. We have athletes and have always had athletes. No reason why we can’t run up the score against cmu and acc coastal schools.

no one can honestly justify not scoring 30 ppg in today’s game.
 
just a middling offense wouldve won us 10 games this year even w the key defensive breakdowns in situational spots. also, a QB who doesnt puke all over himself esp after getting into his feelings for sucking it up

You're absolutely right. A Jim Tressell offense would've won us 10-11 games this season.

Think about this - how many current ACC HC's would not have won 10 games with out talent this year? Can't pull out Willie cuz he's gone. See my point. I wish the BOT's or even, dare I say it....the Athletic Department asked that question...

Totally agree.......much more time for the opposing D to read, react, and call a counter play with more than enough time left.
 
Enos gets canned. Nothing else matters.

Not who starts, who improves next year, what concepts we run, or what kicks we make.
Unless he goes we will not be winning the coastal. His play calling during games is the #1 liability on this team at this moment.

Followed by Barry. Terrible recruiter and developer. He was bad in Tampa in the NFL and got ran out of town, and has been bad in college at Miami. Blocking is the fundamental of offense. Without it an offense simply cannot function.

Those two need to go before we can even think of making adjustments.

It doesn't matter if Enos is calling plays in 2020...we can't win the Coastal with him as our OC

This. We don’t even have to be Briles or Babers type speed. But go fast enough where the defense can’t sub and put a little stress on them.

My biggest gripe with what Enos has put on the field is that the defense doesn’t get stressed in anyway. We play slow so they can sub at will and get all the play calls exactly how they want. We play inside the hashes which lets the defense disguise blitzes and confuses our OL. We don’t shift in a way that causes any confusion (outside of UF first drive). We run jet motion which is fine but that’s routine in most college offense.

Just like Richt, opposing DCs get all giddy to play against this basic offense.
 
Our S&C staff will be working with our players to help them improve this off-season. What will our staff do to improve? Who's training Enos?

The only problem with this is the one we've had for years. We can't convert on 3rd down consistently, so faster offense just makes our D play more. They get tired and the other team gets more scoring opportunities. Obviously the Os primary job is to score point not protect the D, I'm just saying it's an issue. Speed works if you can score or at least get a few 1st downs. We don't seem to be able to do those things.

I see what you’re saying (FSU this year for example). And that’s definitely a negative when playing with tempo. Risk v reward. If our D is as good was we think, an extra possession or 2 shouldn’t hurt IF we can put up points. My personal opinion is that a faster pace and more space would lead to more points and we wouldn’t have to solely rely on a dominant performance from the D to win against middle of the road teams.

Our third down issues have just as much to do with 1st and 2nd down. I can’t find a season stat but the few games where I did the math myself earlier in the year had us at 3rd and 7+ as an average. Maybe that can be my project for the weekend to get the season average. We’ve missed plenty of 3rd and shorts as well but to be dead last in country everything has to go wrong.

A spread isn’t a magic potion where we’ll end up like LSU guaranteed but I think the data from across the country shows that’s the way to play offense in today’s day and age.
