Great memories, 1974 was a huge year for people named CARTER.

Defensive lineman Rubin Carter (U HOF) was an All-American for the Miami Hurricanes in 1974

Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter announced his run for the presidency in 1974

Professional Boxer, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter was in a prison in 1974 when a book came out about the 1966 triple murder that put him there. Bob Dylan eventually wrote and performed the song Hurricane, that helped get him another trial - I saw that Desire Tour in Kansas City that year.

You must have been rich. In high school we got one a/c building in 68 I think. At home, I got ac when I got married and moved out. I do remember some of the big stores like Burdines being cooler when I was a kid, bit most just had those old big fans. Heck, I taught junior high math at dade country school without ac in classroom in early 70’s. The old southern lament was I 95 let the Yankees get down here and A/C let they stay.

My parents got a window unit for their BR around '54. When I was younger, we used to have floor fans in the bedrooms.

During the summer we spent a lot of time at the pool. I think parents used to worry about polio spreading at the pools during the summer. First vaccine against polio came in around '54.

Yes, life was different, less hectic. Miami had a night life that appealed to the adults. Great nightclubs, top stars of the era came to Miami.

Hard to be nostalgic about the '50's in Miami if you're too young to remember.
 
I never had ac until 1968 at age 23. I remember those floor fans. I don’t really miss the Miami of my youth very much. The 50s were just a different time. Not better or worse IMO, just different. Anyway, new memories are made every day.

Growing up in the '80's vs the '00's can not be compared. In one u have the internet where any type of information is at your fingertips, and the other u had to be at home or put change in a machine to even call someone.

I remember floor fans. Unfortunately, my mom thought you catch colds from fans and would turn them off the minute she thought us asleep. I’d get up and turn it back on- rise and repeat. It was always off when I woke up. Miami was big with the stars back then, you’re right. Those old hotels on the Beach had most of the big stars appearing.

Houses were built better for the heat than today’s. Crap space underneath, porches, wide windows to open. We had acre of land with bunch of shade trees. Not so such concrete and asphalt to radiate heat.

Internet and mobile phones were around in the 80s.

Guess u haven’t seen the movie war games.

That's a reach. The rich had mobile phones, and the internet can't even be considered the internet compared to what it is now. Today even the poorest of the people have an Obama phone with internet. We are basically information robots. We can tell u anything about everything in a matter of seconds.

The only real change has been the phones... Or more precisely, the access that smart phones have given us to the full library of the worlds ****.

Everything else just represents a change in habit moresore than a change in way of life.

I believe the internet has had a way larger impact than cellular phones. Its changed the way everyone lives. The internet will eventually shut down Walmart, there is virtual reality, it's made everyone have a perfect IQ score. The internet is a world changer.

Yeah, my mom and dad saw tons of stars at the old beach hotels Gleason, Davis Jr., Sinatra etc. My mom still tells the story about when they saw Kennedy in his motorcade coming down 7th ave, she swears he waved directly to her. Lol.
That was a completely different Miami.

Maybe not but...

You could IF you were born during those times..... It's not like you have a choice when you're born

Anyway I for one, and most others had more fun back then than we could stand.

If some of us had as much fun now as then....we'd have to legally separate into twins

I remember fans in the windows growing up in the 60's. Most homes were CBS with big awning windows. Got window A/C units in my step-fathers house about 1970. Didn't have A/C in school until my first year of middle school in the new Apollo Middle School in '69 or '70. When I got to McArthur in '71, we had window A/C units.
 
The Memorial classroom building had windows that went all the way to the ceiling and the dropped ceiling had to be angled to accommodate it. That building goes way back.
