Those are USC-like sanctions, and to the credit of Davis, he recruited like USC while dealing with them. Despite having only 12 scholarships in 1996, and a few more in 1997, he put together two of arguably the best recruiting classes in the history of college football during that stretch.

Of the 12 scholarships Miami gave out in 1996, four players went on to be first round picks in the NFL Draft, including Edgerrin James and Bubba Franks. That's right, you read that correctly: In a world where it's virtually impossible to produce four first rounders with a full allotment of 25 scholarships... Davis did it with just 12.

What might be even more impressive is that he did the same thing the following year.

In 1997 Davis had around 15 scholarships, but produced four more first rounders, Ed Reed (he was known as "Edward" at the time), Reggie Wayne, Dan Morgan and Santana Moss. And again, that's just first rounders, and doesn't include guys like Najeh Davenport, Al Blades, Delvin Brown and others, who ended up playing in the NFL."

But but but.......the records say Butch didn't win anything at Miami. I mean NC. Nothing, zero, zilch, nada !!

If Butch wants the job, then the BOT and Flake should pull the trigger right now. Get Butch on the recruiting trail right now. Give him a chance to evaluate the current players under game conditions as the season winds down. I especially like the idea of Butch grooming his successor. The article makes so much sense.

There are some up-and-comers out there like Herman and Fuente who are getting lots of speculation. They might end up being great coaches at big-time schools. But, they are a gamble. They could be a repeat of Folden who also was an up-and-comer. Butch is a proven winner in the Miami environment. There are some current assistants in both college and the pros with Miami connections. If you want the Miami connection, then it is most logical to hire the man who was the HC during the teams last run. Do the BOT and Flake have any other real choice? But, I suppose that won't prevent them from turning their backs on Butch. Somehow, they want to believe that a Herman or a Cristobal are locks to accomplish what Butch has already demonstrated. Foolish people.
