Arky State in the news

Looks to me like the school's legal counsel just wimped out. There's nothing illegal about this if the players were the ones who initiated and carried out the idea. It would be different if the administration or coaches had imposed the idea on the players, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Bingo. I agree with this.

Recently a fire chief in Illinois told the firefighters to remove their American flag decals from their lockers and helmets. Some guys had Marine stickers because they served. None of the stickers were offensive in any way and some were even 9/11 memorial decals.

Well 4 of them told the chief they would not remove their American flag sticker and got suspended.

I feel this country is going to **** and it's sad

I'm also in the Air Force and back in the days when I wasn't alive. They would put pictures on the airplanes. Idk if you guys remember but the military stopped because people got offended.

Pretty much half of all college athletes have a cross of some sort tattooed visibly on their body it seems. I had no idea people were that offended by the presence of a cross.

I like that their AD supported the players. Had a lot of interaction with Terry when he was with FAU during the Schnellenberger years. Good guy.

so many innocent lives lost because of "religion"

what if a team player that was ****** or muslim died and players wanted to put the davids cross or the star/crescent on the helmet.. you would have Christian and ****** groups taking this to the supreme court.

but I do believe in freedom, so if no laws are broken and no player on the team or staff complained let me do as they wish

This is nuts. Miami should put crosses on their helmets in support. This is crazy.

Miami is a private university -- they can do whatever they want.

Arkansas State is a public university; therefore, they are a government entity which must abide by anything in the Constitution that limits the powers of government entities.

I'm sure the school could have made a case basically telling people to let it go, and the lawyer is a **** for bringing it up in the first place, but it looks to me like the school just didn't feel like fighting because it isn't worth the trouble.

Edit: Holy Cross helmet was a concept, my bad, but their logo still uses the cross and the same concept applies (what a public school can do vs. what a private school can do). -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Cross_Crusaders_football

I don't care what fairy tales people tell themselves to get them thru the night. But if you are a secular institution taking tax dollars, keep the religious symbols out of it.

Of course Nisenbaum is a ***.

I don't want people to be offended because I don't want to hear someone bytch constantly about it. And why would some people "need" to be offended?

People "bytch" about everything. Cars. Clothes. Weight. Friends. Family. Politics. Sexual preference. Al Golden. The list is endless. At least this situation has meaning. If they want to complain, just put it on the tab.

Where does the PC world end? I'm offended that they're offended. Where's my justice?

I think they erred on the side of caution. This was a student led decision, not a school one. It's a school function, but not a required one, where we would see them. Looks like the lawyer didn't feel like making a case for the school, if one should come up. The players pray after the games any way, and no one is suing over that.

If they hadn't modified the uniform, and had instead wrote something on eye black e.g. Tebow, or something to that effect, I think they would have been fine. But altering the actual uniform is likely construed as state endorsement since the school owns the uniform.

There is a fairly well-developed, although ever changing and somewhat circuitous body of jurisprudence on this topic.

Some of this stuff is getting out of hand:

I saw last month that a girl got suspended for saying bless you to a classmate when she sneezed.

Those other things you listed have "meaning" to other people as well. This is just one more "meaningful" thing for people to complain about.

It's not about PC to me...again, it's about not hearing people bytch about it. I get tired of it, not offended, but tired of it. It serves no purpose.

I can say with 100% certainty that if a public university in Arkansas put the Star of David on their helmets -- for whatever reason -- then there would be riots in the streets.

I thought it was just a sticker. How was the uniform altered?
